John Eoin Douglas (Letters, 5 September) declares that "we are winning the war on drugs", and states that this serves as a precedent for building a "war on alcohol". Might I ask where his evidence for this assertion lies? A swift trawl through The Scotsman archives reveals very little confidence that this indeed is, or has ever been, the case.
It sounds as if he is constructing an argument for the eventual prohibition of alcohol, and history clearly shows the futility of such extreme measures of societal control. Surely, firm but peaceful negotiation is the way forward.

Time to put down the bottle and take up the Bible. Slip on down to the Kirk next Sunday and turn your life around! The Church of Scotland is a sane and humane church, there is no fire and brimstone only a little positive social activism now and again! The Church of Scotland is going Green!

I have better things to do with my time on sundays thank you very much Beth.

Barry,

The likes of Douglas are not even worth replying to. Whatever you say, he will have a bigotted, brain-dead answer for it. People like him should be held down and force-fed whisky until they either lighten up a bit or die.
