Not so fast
Published Date:

Discussing athletes' and swimmers' speeds (Editorial, 12 August), you say Rebecca Adlington swam at 16mph in winning her 400m gold medal. Not so. Roger Bannister ran the four-minute mile at 15mph. Rebecca also finished in close to four minutes, but her race was only a quarter as far. Do the arithmetic again and you will find top-class 400m swimmers travel at just under 4mph, ie, a brisk walking pace, not Bannister pace.
