Silenced by China
Published Date:

Mike Martin (Letters, 18 August) is mistaken in saying the Chinese human rights activist Hu Jia was detained on his way to a prayer service (this was another activist called Hua Huilin).
Hu Jia's "offence" – for which he has been jailed for three and a half years – seems to have been publicising his human rights views, including by participating via webcam in a European Union parliamentary hearing where he said China had failed to fulfil its promises to improve human rights in the run-up to the Olympics. Mr Hu has also written about the plight of other activists and prisoners in China.
