Any reader who seeks to question the lack of English interest in Scottish affairs (Letters, 2 October), need look no further than the many quiz shows on television. If you wish to stump contestants on The Weakest Link or even, more memorably, on a recent showing of University Challenge, all you have to do is ask a question on some aspect of Scottish life.

Keith Halley bemoans the English ignorance of Scottish affairs, but how much does the average Scot know about Welsh affairs, for example? Though Scottish nationalists obsess about England, it is not reciprocated.

Questions about Scottish affairs on quiz shows that include University Challenge probably do baffle many of the contestants. Watching University Challenge last night I was perturbed to see no Scottish representative on the team. The only one who declared that she lived in Edinburgh was a very clever coloured lass, but she did not claim to be Scottish. Personally, I am baffled by any question that refers to popular music any time after Doris Day was top of the hit-parade. One must ask how many Scottish contestants on shows such as the Weakest Link would fare with questions on Scottish affairs as the intellectual level on these programmes is not often very high. However, bear in mind that some one third of the population of England are either Scots or of Scottish descent and you will realise that there is a great deal more interest in Scottish affairs than is generally believed. The number of cars sporting the Saltire in this part of England appears to be increasing by the day, so yes, we Anglo- Scots are very interested in Scottish affairs.

What was it Pierre Trudeau once said about being Prime Minister of a country whose neighbour was the USA?

"....like sleeping with an elephant....."

The Celtic Nations have had to endure the same sleeping arrangements for the past several hundred years!
