Public representatives of all political persuasions take the annual Remembrance Sunday memorial commemorations very seriously (Letters, 10 November).
Alex Salmond attended Sunday's Remembrance service in Edinburgh in his capacity as First Minister of Scotland.

Last year I laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in London on behalf of the SNP/Plaid Cymru group and this year my Plaid colleague, Elfyn Llwyd MP, was present on behalf of both our parties.

In fact, it is only due to SNP-led negotiations with Westminster authorities some years ago that the party secured a presence at the Cenotaph to pay tribute to our fallen servicemen and women.

The SNP and our Welsh sister party, Plaid Cymru, together comprise a joint parliamentary group in the House of Commons, and the Westminster leader of each party takes it in turn to represent the group as a whole at the annual service at the Cenotaph. This is the only arrangement that enables both parties to be represented at the Cenotaph.

ANGUS ROBERTSON MP

Westminster SNP Leader

House of Commons, London

Aa a veteren of the United Kingdom's Armed Forces I really wish the men who were responsible for wars, Politicians, would remember the dead & not involve themselves in party, point making statements. They are the ones who will grow old & nowadays fat too on the pensions they allow themselves.
Whilst the poor maimed service personell cannot draw benefits which are made to anyone else.
In the words of the old Beatle song "give peace a chance"

Or just give us peace...

How many years ago did the SNP think it was so important for them to "get their turn" - what happened all those years before...did they care? Do the dead care? Do we?

The SNP are a party who are committed to the destruction of the United Kingdom. Is it not hypocritical of them therefore to attend a ceremony that commemorates those who gave their lives in the defence of the UK? If it was not for such acts of supreme sacrifice, Robertson and his ilk would not have the freedom (which they claim we lack)to destroy the country they died to protect.

How to take ignorance to a new level. In fact, I would argue your post is highly, highly offensive.

It's about respect. Not hypocrisy. Many men who fought in the wars were nationalists (both my grandfathers for example) but that isn't really relevant. As a nationalist I respect all those men who laid down their lives regardless of political persuasion.

We don't claim a lack of freedom (in the context you use the word). What we do claim is the democratic right to vote on whether our nation takes its place as a real country.
