Chancellor Alistair Darling's smugness is unbelievable (your report, 17 July). He obviously thought that the people would be in raptures over his decision to scrap the projected 2p rise in fuel duty. However, he should realise that most people believe the chronic hardships facing us all stem to some extent from the extortionate existing fuel tax which affects all aspects of our daily lives.
If Mr Darling wants any credibility, he should reduce the current tax and give everyone a breathing space to get their lives back in order. Until then his pronouncements should be treated with the derision they deserve.

The 2p rise is not scrapped, it is just put-off until, if I recall correctly, next April.
So there is even less reason for people to be overjoyed at the generocity of HMG!

It's a great bit of spin, though. Everyone is made to feel happy that something that hasn't happened, still hasn't happened. Not only that, next year it will be hailed as another example of good government when it is again postponed and we are all told we are better off all over again. I can't wait to save that 2p a litre again next year! That will be 4p a litre I'll have saved. What a bargain.
