Unfairness of council tax
Your report, "High fliers could flee Scotland to dodge local income tax" (17 March) told readers how much various top Scottish businessmen, including Sir Fred Goodwin, would pay if a local income tax was put into place.
Alongside this information was the amount Sir Fred pays in council tax, £2,338 annually. For the sake of mathematical simplicity, let's round off that figure to £2,000. As it happens, that is the same amount I am asked to pay. Now, if figures are to be believed, Sir Fred earns in the region of £4 million per annum. I (and many hundreds of pensioners) have an income of £5,000 per annum. The gross unfairness of council tax is there for all to see.
It would appear that the SNP is trying to rectify this unfairness, and it is to be hoped that a fairer solution will be reached.
