Does David J Hollingdale (Letters, 8 May) not realise the simple truth that violence breeds violence? As for his "teachers of yesteryear" I can remember being a student music teacher at Preston Street Primary and witnessing a teacher (whose name I have fortunately forgotten) with the belt always in her hand, parading up and down the rows of children, lashing out at any child who moved a muscle or answered a question wrongly. Nonsense. What these children needed was 12 rounds with Muhammad Ali if they sneezed or looked at someone funny.

That would have taught them respect. Because they weren't beaten up by a heavyweight boxer, look at the mess society is in today and all that rubbish.....

Thrash them all, plus thier parents to an inch of thier very existance!

Then those that duly conform can go about thier business in safety and comfort.
