Your report on the battle of the sexes (3 September) appears to be missing any details about women and leadership roles in the voluntary sector, despite the heading in your table entitled "public and voluntary sector".
In fact, the Scottish voluntary sector is leading the way in workforce equality. An impressive 54 per cent of chief executives of voluntary organisations in Scotland are women – that's almost five times the number of female local authority chiefs.

This figure is not insignificant – the voluntary sector employs as many people as the NHS in Scotland and contributes £3.87 billion a year to the Scottish economy, providing jobs for 129,000 people.

Of course a high proportion of our workforce are women. But I also suspect our sector's commitment to addressing inequality and discrimination in society is properly reflected inside our organisations. Delivering equality is about more than adopting policies.

MARTIN SIME

Chief executive, Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations

"Of course a high proportion of our workforce are women."

Well, how about some equality for men?

More men than women are in prison in Scotland. What are the SCVO going to do about that? Women have longer life expectancies than men in Scotland. What are the SCVO going to do to reduce the life expectancy of women and thereby create equality?

The whole thing is a nonesense. Equality as such is a misguided aim. Equal to what and equal in what respects? Fairness and justice are more important. Futhermore, fair and just treatment can lead to unequal outcomes. If it does, we should accept them whether they are, in our view fair and whether or not we approve. The so-called glass ceiling might be a case in point.

Sex equality as such is a silly aim. What matter is how and why equality and inequality come about.
