Wrong time for strike call
Published Date:

We are in the midst of financial meltdown, with a recession looming and tens of thousands of private-sector jobs in jeopardy
One group of workers, however, remains largely insulated against these job losses – the public sector, in particular Scotland's 260,000 local council workers. With their greater job security, their final-salary pensions, underwritten by the government via the taxpayer, and their institutionalised absenteeism, one would have thought they would appreciate their good fortune.
One would also have thought they would have kept their heads below the parapet until the financial tornado had blown itself out before again voicing their grievances over pay and conditions. Seemingly not, with their union, Unison, announcing further strike action (your report, 9 October). It really does beggar belief that in these unprecedented times, the union considers this appropriate action.
