SOCIAL background remains a major determinant behind children's life chances, according to a social mobility commission
set up by Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg.

The group, which was chaired by Martin Narey, the chief executive of children's charity Barnardo's, said that increased investment in education had disproportionately benefited the middle class.

There are so many examples in life (and history) which make this an absolute load of b*llocks! If folk want to succeed then they can.It doesn't take "middle class benefits" to achieve that. Just the desire to succeed,a thirst for knowledge to improve, and HARD WORK!
To all the whiners who think different, trot of down to the brew to pick up your benefits and have another whinge at how "LIFE ISN'T FAIR".

I agree with Dragonhead, too many experts and not enough common sense. If a child truly wants to succeed now a days it is 100% easier than it was in the sixties. I would add that with so many experts on the go giving theoritical advice, it now becomes quite a difficult path to follow.

#2 Mmmm, don't know if I agree with that. Bright kids in the sixties could always aim for the town's Grammar School where they would get a decent education. Nowadays, they're stuck at their local sink comprehensive, having their classes constantly interrupted by the next generation of work-shy dole monkeys. Academically, they've got no chance in that environment.

#1, yes there are lots of examples. But there are even more for the opposite case.

This is Broon's active socialism in operation. He wants to be "fair", which means levelling down in social class and education. He's getting what he wants if we look at the standards being achieved, or not.
