GOOD DAY

Beijing hotels
On the opening night of the Olympic Games, revenue per available room in Beijing's hotels increased by 546 per cent to $390 (£210) according to Deloitte. Occupancy reached 86.3 per cent while average room rates increased 421 per cent to $451.


BAD DAY

Continental pilots

CONTINENTAL Airlines will next month lay off 140 to 180 pilots as it begins reducing flights to cope with high fuel costs and a sluggish economy. The redundancies are part of 3,000 expected job cuts but lower than the 500 pilots the airline had originally planned to axe.
