King of Pop reigns again but is denied top spot in singles chart

MICHAEL Jackson topped the album chart and made six new entries in the singles top 40 as fan rushed to buy his material in the wake of his death.
His Number Ones album, which features his biggest hits, raced up the charts from 121 to reach number one. The same album earned Jackson his last number one hit when it was released in 2003.

Four of his other hit albums also made a reappearance in the top 20 yesterday, with a total of 11 Michael Jackson or Jackson Five albums in this week's Top 200. Some 43 of this week's Top 200 singles feature the singer, the Official Charts Company said.

Thriller, the biggest selling album of all time, surged from 179 to number seven, compilation King of Pop reached 14, Off The Wall got to 17 and The Essential Michael Jackson was at number 20.

Retailers said that demand had been overwhelming since Jackson's death, but his extensive back catalogue meant no one song stood out in sales and he was narrowly denied a posthumous entry in the singles top 10.

The top song was Man in the Mirror, which re-entered the charts at number 11 nearly 20 years after its original release. Billie Jean got to 25, Smooth Criminal to 28, Beat It reached 30 and Earth Song reached 38.

Jackson has been dominating sales at music retailers and download sites across the world since his death – yesterday his songs topped Apple's iTunes download chart in every country except Japan.

Gennaro Castaldo, a spokesman for HMV, said the retailer saw an 80-fold increase in demand for Jackson's music in the 24 hours after his death, dwarfing the leap in sales after their deaths of Elvis and John Lennon.

He added: "It's possible Michael's music will dominate the official charts in the coming weeks."

Why is this appearing under UK news? It should be in the International section.

He allegedly said he didn't want to die like Elvis. There are some commonalities: both were drug addicts and on the verge of bankruptcy at the time of death.

And like Elvis with the sale of music and marketiing, his finances will see a posthumous revival. No doubt followed by stories on how Wacko he was, who owns what rights and protracted court cases. Not to mention how his death was faked and he's living a 'normal' life flipping burgers - "there's a guy works down the chip shop......."

It's a sad indictment of modern society that the media has spent 4 days so far hyping up the demise of a celebrity and the hysteric response of a large section of the public indicates that something is lacking in their lives. Would they respond as much to a close member of their family? My only dread is what will the media coverage and public hysteria be like when Liz I&II goes

I agree - if you weren't enough of a fan to buy his music before why would you suddenly buy his music when he dies?

Who is buying his music now? Hardcore fans who already own all his albums but are buying them again because he's died, or casual members of the public who are just getting his music cos he's died?

His music is well represented in those re-entries. "Billie Jean" shows there was a time when he was capable of creating good stuff, and is rightfully held up as a classic. "Earth Song" is a desparate piece of offensively pretentious nonsense from somebody who was well past his best, even then.

A lot of us grew up with Michael Jackson, we listened to the Jackson Five when we were weans, and bought the albums (classic) in the eighties, then watched with horror at what happened to him in the latter years of his life.

Unfortunately he is probably going to be remembered for the alleged paedophilia as much as for his music, a lot of which in the seventies and eighties was outstanding.

opinion on MJ will always be split those myself included who grew up in the seventies and early eighties appreciated the music, but after the BAD album it went down hill and those who see nothing wrong in Jacko musically and personally. Trying to relive your childhood with other children is no way for a man in his forties to behave and naive to think those parents would not look for compensation with accusations couldn't be trully proven but also couldn't be trully denide, hence payout.

What happened to that oxygen tank he was sleeping in so he could come back to life, years in the future.

Good "pop" music. I was disturbed however by how shocking bad a singer he was LIVE. Maybe it was all that twiching he does on stage, but his voice was terrible.

Probably from one of his last tours, but still, he should have retired from the stage at that point, because his voice was shot.
