McGhee poised to snub Hearts

Published Date: 27 May 2008
HEARTS' hopes of appointing Mark McGhee as their new manager appeared to be dashed last night when Motherwell said he had agreed to stay with them.
"Motherwell Football Club has successfully concluded negotiations with Mark McGhee, and he is staying at Fir Park next season," read a statement from the club's owner, John Boyle. "We are delighted, as is Mark."

As late as yesterday afternoon, Hearts remained quietly confident that they were closing in on their preferred choice as manager. They understood McGhee was flying to Lithuania yesterday in order to have talks today with the Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov.

A Hearts source also said that they had by that stage been granted permission by Motherwell to speak to McGhee. Motherwell turned down Hearts' initial request on Friday in what was widely seen as merely a negotiating stance in the hope of winning a higher compensation fee rather than a real fight to keep their manager.

According to a friend of Boyle's, however, events took a turn in Motherwell's favour when McGhee told his employer he wanted to speak to Hearts about a job where there was a reputed salary of £350,000 on offer – well in excess of what he currently earns. Boyle told McGhee that Motherwell were just as keen to speak to him, and that, while they would not stand in his way if in the end he opted to move, they wanted him to consider their new offer carefully.

Boyle's offer to McGhee is not thought to have matched what he could have earned at Tynecastle, but it is a substantial increase on the modest sum for which he joined the club. Scott Leitch, McGhee's assistant who would have accompanied him to Edinburgh, is also thought to have agreed an improved deal.

McGhee is believed to have flown to London yesterday and was ready to board another flight to Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, when Boyle got in touch and persuaded him not to go. The two also had informal discussions on Sunday at Celtic Park, where they were watching the tribute game for Phil O'Donnell, the Motherwell player who collapsed and died during a match last year.

Hearts launched their search for a new manager in January, when they disbanded the coaching triumvirate which had been in place for a few months. Stephen Frail was appointed caretaker, but a statement from the club made it plain they were looking for a more experienced man, one who had taken charge of British clubs.

McGhee, who has been manager at Reading, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Millwall among other teams, was identified by Hearts months ago as one of the most desirable potential candidates. He later emerged as the front-runner when Craig Levein committed himself to his present job at Dundee United.

McGhee has, if anything, enhanced his reputation since Hearts first became interested in signing him. Although they were widely expected to suffer a decline in form due to a heavy fixture backlog and a heavier pitch, Motherwell held on to finish in third place in the SPL and claim a spot in next season's Uefa Cup.

Hearts finished eighth – their worst position for years. They were clearly in need of a stabilising influence in the shape of a man who could shake the squad into shape.

They thought they had found such an influence in McGhee. Now, barring a further change of heart by the Motherwell manager, it looks like they will be required to start from scratch.

Having waited until the end of the season to make their move, and having focused firmly on one single target, they have now left themselves with very little time to find a replacement. Frail was to be offered a coaching post further down the pecking order if McGhee and Leitch made the move, and he was expected to seek a move elsewhere. It is hard to see him and Hearts being reconciled at this stage.

I suggest Vlad approach that mad Dustin the Fowl puppet thing that represented Ireland in Eurovision, after all he has experience of Europe competition and is as credible as Hearts can possibly expect - wait a minute – no experience of Europe is necessary for Hearts – but another advantage for Vlad would be that Dustin would accept his team sheets, although even he might raise an eyebrow at the number of Lithuanians in the side.

Anyway looking forward to taking 12 points off of yous next season you losers. And please don’t even think you have a chance of landing the likes of Billy Davies. Far bigger clubs such as Leicester are already interested in him.

Seriously – someone somewhere in Lithuania will probably get the job. And he’ll probably get you relegated. If Carlsberg made joke football teams…

yes #15 I did realise you were quoting. But face facts McGhee ain't going to Tynecastle. & he's went up in my estimation for not taking on the job.

Anyway whenever things go wrong for my team it gives me comfort to know that at least Rangers will never suffer like a wee diddy team like Hearts suffer. And believe me this will be a season of the most intense suffering for you.

Seriously pal best boycotting Tynie and getting rid of the Mad One then you can go back to the old days and become again the club we could always rely on to offset some of our has-beens to. Grateful to receive them you were too.

Feel free to call me a moron but you'll regret not taking my advice when Hearts go the way of Third Lanaek, Clydebank et al. I'll be smking a cigar and drinking a wee malt in the club's memory.

If the offer to take over at hearts is there, and he will have a cast iron guarantee that there will be no interference in team selection, mcgee would be mad to turn this down.

This is a massive opportunity for him to put in a serious challenge to Celtic and Rangers, and he needs his head looked at if he's going to turn it down.
21

GeorgeCowieOrWalterKidd?,

27/05/2008 02:24:07
#2 I fail to see how this is Hearts fault or makes Hearts a joke. The club should be credited for approaching McGhee and holding out for the guy they want.

The media, and even the comments of McGhee himself, had us believe it was done and dusted, not Hearts. Every media outlet said he was joining.

It's a very strange turn of events given McGhee's earlier comments, but Hearts can't exactly convince him to join if we're not allowed to talk to him. Maybe we should go the Old Firm route of approaching club employees....
22

23

GeorgeCowieOrWalterKidd?,

27/05/2008 02:35:25
#22 I hardly see Motherwell would let him talk to Celtic if not Hearts. He could be holding out and is tight with Strachan so they could have had a chat and maybe McGhee knows something we don't about Strachan's plans. Even if Strachan stayed another season, then left and McGhee knows this, there's no guarantee McGhee would be a shoe-in for Celtic in a year's time. If that was the case, he'd be better off having a go with Hearts and at least earning more dosh in the interim.

I hope we go for Jim Jeffries now - my first choice anyhow as McGhee was always likely to be lured away, or would be the subject of unsettling speculation. Just thought he'd be lured away after joining Hearts, not before.

I suppose any owner has the right to have an influence on team matters but fortunately in most cases it doesn't happen. We all like to select the team and it is guaranteed there would be many varied selections. No matter what team plays we should expect 100% from the players and didn't get that at Tynecastle the past season. They did show on occasion they could turn it on so no excuse for lack of ability, lack of effort yes. It is up to the governing bodies to rule unless a person has proper coaching certificate then that person have no say on playing matters. They can have an opinion naturally.

We can argue about the Flair side and Frail side but not a great deal between them.

It's also worth remembering the Jim Jeffries "U turn" when he was coming to us and then he wasn't, then he did.

#42 CJ,

A little rattled this morning? Not like you to get so wound up.

#48 CJ (again)

I think it may be a straw clutch, even Five Live had it in their sports report this morning that MM was going nowhere.

Dissapointing for all you Hearts fans out there but reading the statements it's being dressed up that he wanted to stay at Motherwell and in no way was the reason that Vlad wouldnt give the much sought after "assurances". Either this is a cover up or McGhee actually wanted to stay?

If it was because he couldnt get assurances the media would have loved this and lapped it up for days but I find it hard to believe someone would willingly turn down the chance to treble(?) their salary and undertake a bigger job, especially someone with the previous track record of McGhee.

Sadly I think the line that will be fed is that he couldnt bear to leave Motherwell (yeah, right) after the emotions of the last season & the chance to watch them get stuffed in the first round of the UEFA... Believe that if you will.

Seldom do we see loyalty in football when hard cash is on the table. If Mark McGhee has indeed snubbed Hearts to stay at Motherwell, well done to him. As a Hibby watching from the sidelines over here, I cringe regularly when Romanov sticks his stubby digits in first team matters. Scottish footbaall as a whole has suffered as a result of his interference. No decent Scottish manager will touch Hearts for years to come as long as he is still chairman. You all bragged about his cash injection when he arrived. Look back on your management issues. Look up the table and see who is above you. Act now, boot him out before he sinks you. Or you will all be signing at Easter Road or City Park, your choice.

Do not believe what he writes. HE ONLY ASSUMES AND KNOWS NOTHING.

Here is this to read:

The manager told the press: "I felt a move to Hearts would have been premature for me. It smacked a bit of what I did earlier in my managerial career. When a bigger job came up, I went.

Hearts was a bigger job but make no mistake, I would never say it was a better job. I couldn't allow myself to go this time because I have to give a little more back. As much as Hearts was a fantastic opportunity I have to stick it out at Motherwell a bit longer."

"I was at the door of the plane and would have been the last passenger on board. Bit I turned round and said, 'I can't do this'. We are in Europe and I always wanted that on my CV. I want to have that experience.

"I've a fantastic little team at Motherwell. Even on the last night of the season when we won at Hibs the performance excited me. I just found it impossible to draw myself away from that.

"It's certainly not about money either. If it had been a financial decision I'd be on my way to Vilnius right now. But the decision wasn't down to money. It was just about the way I felt about things at Motherwell."

JamboThrough&Through - If McGhee was to go to Hearts, would he be allowed to sign those WORLD CLASS players that Romanov promised a while back?

Staying at Motherwell seems a sensible move anyway. He has the opportunity to manage in European games, thus increasing his stature. Frankly you'd need to be crazy to take on the manager's job at HOMfc these days.

Talk107 reports that nothing has been signed yet- McGhee's currently in Brighton. McGhee will meet Romanov's financial guy this morning.

Check the Motherwell website, how much more official do you need it?

Easy on there with the wise cracks, a load of good work done there.

Quiz question

How many dogs did they get through the appeal(s)?

It's so easy...

#85 I know, but there were direct quotes from Jeffries when he turned us down too. I'm not saying it'll happen, just that it's not dead yet.

TBH makes no big difference to me. McGhee's a good manager who I'd like to see at Hearts but he's not the only manager in the world. At least we've seen signs that the club are aiming for the right type of people IMO.

It'll be interesting to see what happens next.

In a way he has messed this up as he has messed Hearts up. If Vlad's track record had been along the lines of most "normal" owners/chairmen then it is unlikely that Boyle could have persuaded MM to stay.

Even if Vlad did not effect this decision directly like it or not his reputation has made it easier for MM to make his decision.

Bring back John Robertson as well. Dream team.

#90 So very sad to read your post.
Sad that you'd be happy with Billy Davies (no chance) or even better, Jim Jeffries!
Just because it would be easier to get them!
That's the difference between Hearts and a proper football club like the Gers.

We have Internationally respected coaches like Advocaat and players like Laudrup, Gazza, Newman, Arteta, Hutton whilst Hearts get Puredeadkrapimov and Huvnaeheardofthistwat.

No contest.

What has happened to Coach Frail?

With time he can become top class leader and lead Hearts to top of bottom six championship.

Morning chaps,

Does anyone here think McGhee used Hearts as a bargaining chip? It seems Well have upped his salary - as they should have done, McGhee earned every penny of whatever they paid him last season.

It seems Vlad's test of faith is to get potential employees to "fly to Vilnius"... and McGhee refused the test. What happens next?

I like the way Rangers and Hibs fans, are looking forward to taking 12 points out of 12 from us next season, but then also presume we won't get a decent manager and will finish bottom six again, does this mean they believe they will also be in bottom six, to take their last 3 points from us? Morons!

You reap what you sow Mr Romanov.

After the treatment of Burley & Rix, it will be hard to lure an experienced boss in to take the helm at Hearts.

Avrim Grant's available!

#99 I bet the other passengers on that flight were well pleased by the delay his no-show would have caused. I agree he was probably just using us to up the ante at Fir Park. Supporters of other teams have been telling us all week that he was just a mercenary and now probably looks like they were right.

On to Plan 'B' (and just hope this doesn't read "see Plan A"!)

Well. There we go. Made an approach for number 1 on the list, he seems to have said "No". On to number 2.

Disappointing. But, as I've said before, provided the manager we get in is of the right standing in the game I don't care who he actually is. Provided it's a sign that Vlad will stop his interfering, that's really all I'm looking for. Small dreams I know, but that's where we are these days.
