Britons borrow to fund their summer break

ONE in three Britons planning to take a holiday this year will use debt to fund their trip, a survey has revealed.

About 32 per cent of people who are going on holiday will pay for it with a credit card, travel agent payment plan or by borrowing from family and friends, according to insurer Bright Grey.

The average person will borrow just over 1,200, with 58 per cent admitting they will not be able to repay it straight away. Thirteen per cent said they had to have a holiday every year regardless of their finances.

The survey also found that just under a third of people planned to take their main holiday in the UK this year, while those going abroad planned to be away for less than ten days on average.

Only one in ten plans a long-haul trip this summer.

Roger Edwards of Bright Grey said: "Getting away on holiday can be a high point of the year for many people, but it is important they don't end up with a financial holiday hangover on their return."
