Man killed in head-on HGV collision

A 39-year-old man has died and another is fighting for his life after two HGV lorries were involved in a head-on collision.

Nearby off-duty paramedics rushed to the scene one mile south of Cockburnspath on the A1 in East Lothian this morning around 3am.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to free one man, believed to be in his fifties, who was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary by a specialist trauma team.

Police closed the road where the incident took place and said to expect traffic disruption in the area.

A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said: "Medic One, the trauma team, was called to attend from the ERI.

"One male was freed by firefighters and taken to the Royal Infirmary with crush injuries."

Returning paramedics came across a second crash on the A1 at Grantshouse, and took an elderly couple to the ERI.
