Letter: Tram disgrace

The Edinburgh tram saga continues its descent through farce to tragedy (your report, 12 May). Now we learn Princes Street is again to close for nine months, to make good the blunders of the contractor's first attempt.

We are told the Princes Street works will begin on 3 July. On the night of 2 July the citizens should descend en masse to occupy the street and deny the contractors access. The authorities could not forcibly remove 10,000 peaceful protesters without incurring even more contempt and disgust.

It might also help if our new government made it clear that Bilfinger Berger will not be allowed to tender for any public sector work for the next five years (or until it makes adequate restitution to Edinburgh).
