Turner piece fetches £30m

ONE of Scotland's most valuable works of art has been bought by the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Turner's Modern Rome - Campo Vaccino will be lost to the nation after being sold at Sotheby's in London for 29,721,150 - a new auction record for the British master.

The painting, which had been on loan to the National Galleries of Scotland, was sold by a descendant of the 5th Earl of Rosebery who bought the painting in 1878 while on honeymoon with his wife Hannah Rothschild.

There were six bidders for the painting in the sale, driving the price well above the pre-sale expectations.
