THE King is dead, long live the King. That will be the attitude of most people in the hard-headed world of business as they absorb the implications of the regicide at Royal Bank of Scotland.
In the notoriously unsentimental arena of high finance Sir Fred Goodwin, though remaining as chief executive of RBS for a little longer, is yesterday's man. Sooooo last week. Fred who? It's that brutal.

But before we erase him from the collective ...

Shortly after RBS's statement about not seeking government funding had been shown to be incorrect, they issued another statement saying that there was no substance to rumours that Fred Goodwin was to leave. I made a comment regarding this on these pages, pointing out that if their previous record was anything to go by, Goodwin would have left by the following day, which turned out to be correct. My comment was removed without explanation. I wonder why?

When the bank made the rights issue Fred indicated that he did not see the need for any additional funds to be raised - he was either incompetant or he was being economical with the truth. In either case he was on let's say his final warning with shareholders and had to go. I would like him to actually face the ordinary shareholders who had RBS shares in their pension fund and have seen their value drop 80% in the last year.

Fair article but nyone who believed you could simply 'do a NatWest' to an International complex multiple legal entity such as ABN should not be allowed near a position of leadership.
