There are only 19 Scots in Team GB (6% of the team), yet Norway with less population than Scotland has over 90 participants. Sport is about participation as well as winning (or losing, as most participants do). But there are very few opportunities for Scots to participate at an olympics as part of 'Team GB'. Based on the Norway approach, a separate Team Scotland should have over 100 participants in it, more than five times as many as today. Scotland's sports men and women therefore receive no benefits from being part of Team GB, quite the opposite in fact. Sports people will perform to the best of their ability no matter the team label. But an Independent Scotland would extensively widen participation opportunities for more Scots sports people at major international events. There is no Union Dividend for Scotland as part of Team GB. Those interested in expanding sport in Scotland should consider the wider implications of this and what the future could hold for sport in Scotland. Imagine, over 100 Scots participants at the London Olympics. Or do some Scots really believe in limiting the opportunities for our people, in sport as well as other areas of life?

Graham Smith defeats his own arguement. I gaining three gold medals in one Olympics Chris Hoy has indeed done something very special not only winning but in the manner of winning.
It is sad that some wish to bring politics into this. Chris Hoy was representing GB as a Scot. He represents Scotland as a Scot. He always will be a Scot as will I.
However I do not have the ability to do something quite exceptional as he has done. Redgrave and Pinsent both were exceptional sportsmen as are Hoy and Ainslie and our oustanding Olympians should be recognised as such.
