Andy Kerr (Debate and Opinion, 16 August), states that he does not subscribe to the myth that proud Scots should want to break away from the UK but believes they would rather remain in partnership therewith.
Of course, no Scot wants to break away from the UK, they merely want Scotland's partnership to be on an equal basis. At the moment, Scotland is a very junior partner to the UK and its capital, London.

However, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, etc – collectively known as the Commonwealth – have no desire to break away from the UK either, but merely put their partnerships with it on an equal basis.

Well said, Mr MacPherson

The idea that the current UK is a "partnership" belongs in the realm of constutional fiction. The UK was created as the constitutional and political framework for Scotland to be controlled and exploited, and this is how it continues to operate.

If there is to be a UK in the future, then it should operate on the basis of equality between sovereign states as suggested by Archy MacPherson.

Indeed, well said Archy.

But I doubt if it will make any difference to the drivel Andy Kerr comes away with.

Spot on Archy. It's what I've always believed ... that's why I'll go for the "independence" option so that our partnership with the English becomes one of complete equality!

What a load of ill-informed nonsense!
Scotland is only a junior partner to those who choose to believe so. Tony Blair and Gordon Brown were noth Scots.
Anglophobia read large!

Tony Blair refused to admit he was Scottish. Gordon Brown tries to portray himslef as British and seems rather embarrased by his Scottishness.

Quisling was apparently Norwegian. not an exact parallel perhaps but a reasonable analogy.

The fact that Blair and Brown are Scottish is irrelevant. Their actions are anti-Scottish.

Lord(Kenneth)Baker of Dorking, a prominent member of the Conservative and Unionist(sic) Party, and once a Cabinet Minister in Thatcher's government, unashamedly summed it up when he publicly stated:
"The United Kingdom is an artificial state and not a real nation!"
