Published Date: 11 April 2009
FOUR Somali pirates adrift in a lifeboat decided valour was the better part of discretion last night – as they maintained an extraordinary stand-off with a US warship armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles.
The pirates, holding an American captain hostage, even defiantly demanded a $2 million ransom.

Hours after Captain Richard Phillips briefly escaped and attempted to swim to the USS Bainbridge, only to be recaptured, tensions increased with his kid
nappers issuing their demand.

The crew on board the USS Bainbridge, who have been negotiating with the pirates off the Horn of Africa, could only watch as Captain Phillips was hauled back inside before a rescue operation could be launched in the early hours of yesterday morning. In the waters off Somalia – where the centuries-old practice of piracy is given a 21st-century twist, with cannon and cutlasses replaced by rocket launchers and Kalashnikovs – the crisis deepened as both sides called up reinforcements.

It also emerged that a hostage was killed in a separate incident as the French navy stormed a yacht being held by pirates in the Gulf of Aden.

While General David Petraus, head of US Central Command, ordered more vessels to support the USS Bainbridge, other pirates sought to back up their comrades – who are stranded without power in the lifeboat – by sailing four other hijacked ships with 54 hostages on board to the scene of the stand-off.

The pirates' strategy is to link up with their comrades, who are holding Russian, German and Filipino hostages among others, and whisk Capt Phillips off to Somalia, which is lawless and has been without a government since 1991 and where they could then hide him and make it more difficult for the US navy to stage a rescue.

Yesterday a fellow pirate, speaking from Haradheere port, said the ransom was $2 million and added that other pirates were taking a hijacked German ship, with foreign crew on board, towards the scene in the Indian Ocean where the lifeboat is floating, watched by the US warships.

He said: "Knowing that the Americans will not destroy this German ship and its foreign crew, they (the pirates] hope they can meet their friends on the lifeboat."

The incident began on Wednesday when Capt Phillips, 53, thwarted the takeover of his 17,000-tonne US-based ship Maersk Alabama when it was attacked 311 miles off the coast. After a long struggle against the invading pirates, the crew members managed to regain control of the ship and it is thought Capt Phillips offered himself as a hostage in order to save his crew.

The four pirates left with their captive in one of the vessel's lifeboats, and while it is now out of fuel, the crew of the USS Bainbridge have dropped off food, water and a radio so that the pirates can communicate with trained FBI negotiators.

Capt Phillips has a radio and contacted the navy and crew of his ship to say he was unharmed, the Maersk shipping company said in a statement. FBI experts are helping negotiate his release. Analysts have said negotiations could be lengthy, with the pirates wanting a hefty ransom for the captain as well as compensation for a vessel that was wrecked in the attack.

Yesterday Mohamed Samaw, a resident of the pirate stronghold in Eyl, Somalia, said four foreign vessels held by pirates were heading towards the lifeboat.

A total of 54 hostages are on two of the ships – citizens of China, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, the Philippines, Tuvalu, Indonesia and Taiwan.

Samaw said two ships left Eyl on Wednesday. A third sailed from Haradhere, another pirate base in Somalia, and the fourth was a Taiwanese fishing vessel seized on Monday that was only 30 miles (48km) from the lifeboat. He said the ships include the German cargo ship Hansa Stavanger, seized earlier this month.

CRIME PAYS – £100m A YEAR

ARMED with the latest equipment and deadly weapons, many of the Somali pirates are a far cry from the swashbuckling stereotypes portrayed on film.

Although currently holed up in a lifeboat with just a few packets of calorie bars and some fishing tackle, they are generally highly efficient at making large amounts of money out of ransoms.

A third of all pirate attacks now take place off the Horn of Africa, making them the most dangerous waters in the world. The area they target now encompasses more than a quarter of the Indian Ocean.

The pirates use advanced equipment such as satellite phones and GPS and are also armed with rocket-propelled grenades and AK-47s.

After receiving tip-offs from contacts at ports, they use speedboats to approach their target. To hijack the ships, the pirates first use grappling hooks and irons and climb aboard with ropes and ladders. Sometimes, they fire first to scare the captain into stopping the ship, so it is easier to board.

They take their hostages to land, where they tend to treat them well while they wait for a ransom to arrive. The cash demands are usually kept relatively low so the money is paid without more drastic action being considered by either side.

But the Kenyan foreign minister estimates pirates have received £100 million in the past year in payments.

Although warships from at least nine countries are now operating in the Gulf of Aden, it is proving almost impossible to police.

The International Maritime Bureau is advising ship-owners to have look-outs or travel fast enough to get away from the pirates.

DEVOTED FAMILY MAN DRAWN TO THE SEA

CAPTAIN Richard Phillips has more than 20 years experience at the helm of tankers and cargo ships facing the dangers of the high seas.

He is described as a devoted family man. He and his wife Andrea, have two children who are both at college. The family live in a farmhouse in the village of Underhill in Vermont.

His wife, a nurse, told an American television station that she was waiting for a "happy ending" and had "faith" in her husband.

She said: "He's a smart man and I know he'll be all right."

Her husband, believed to be 53, graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1979, after planning to study international law. Before that he spent some time as a Boston taxi driver.

As well as being drawn to the sea, he is reportedly an avid skier, snowboarder and footballer, who also enjoys working on his house.

Mrs Phillips told the Boston Herald she was "always concerned" about the possible dangers of her husband's work.

She said her husband had mentioned increasing piracy in a recent e-mail.

"I had always hoped it wasn't going to happen to us," she said.

Relatives said Capt Phillips offered himself as a hostage to the pirates to save his crew.

US media reported that he tried to escape the lifeboat on which he was being held, but was recaptured.

There is no indication that he has been harmed by the Somali pirates who have kidnapped him.

His mother-in-law said he was "a really good father, husband and provider".

By your moronic logic we should have honoured the SS during WWII as they were killing millions of innocents because they were "showing bravery and determination". whats so brave about failing in a hijacking attempt, fleeing with a hostage in a boat and running out of gas ? Sorry I fail to see the bravery. They have no options, their mates will get no where near the scene and their misearble lives are shortly to be ended by a navy seal when they least expect it. A bunch of human filth who will soon get what they deserve.

Hey double dog, I'm sure you noticed that all my comments get deleted in time and the Scotsman has gone as far as banning any variation of Postmark, or numbers like 54, 55, and 56 trying to shut me up, so now I have to get creative and somehow keep bypassing their bans, thus my increasingly foul attitude towards the West. Your Democratic society is going through great lengths to shut me up and it's got my dander up, but I won't be discouraged or defeated, I'll just go the extra mile to have my say.

You know what you can do with your attitude, it's precisely why 'terrorism' abounds, it's the likes of you that instigate and then sit back and bitch when it all blows up in your face, well, I think it looks good on you, reap what you sow.

And another thing loudmouth, China stays at home, we're not the ones smashing human rights all over the world, that would be your lot.
So long live the pirates and I hope they keep being successful, they just don't have all the fancy and expensive weaponry behind them, so they work solely on heart, something your lot sorely lacks.

Hey Gibson, yep, had to change my name due to Western censorship, they banned all variations of Postmark as well as the numbers 54, 55 and 56 and probably many more, I think they are trying to shut me up at all costs, but that ain't gonna happen, not as long as there is breath in my body.
And man, don't even get me started on America, I'm not into torture and paying my taxes to fund the mindless slaughter of so many innocent all over the world at the hands of the American military.
Just enjoying a very pleasant spring afternoon in Shanghai, the weather is great and the food even better. Gee China, sure are glad you are there, in the soulless country rather than here in ours. Being on the West Coast in the US I have had more than my share of dealings with the Chinese and for you to mock Americans is for you to become the poster child for hypocrisy. You people sleep, live and eat in squalor, and the diseases that spread this way is living proof of that. You will stab your own mothers in the back when it comes to money, and do not know the meaning of loyalty and compassion. Your fellow countrymen give new meaning to the word 'torture'. Yeah, you stay in China, lovely Country that is.

The US is starting to look foolish in this situation. Proves we are no longer the superpower we once were. Four scumbag thugs in a lifeboat are holding hostage not only the Captain, but what is supposedly the most powerful military in the world. To make matters worse, the scuzzpuppets have their little loser buddies coming out to join them, bringing along more hostages!

This situation should never have been allowed to escalate to this degree. This should have been handled quietly and with deadly force. I don't want to hear bleeding heart liberal whining about the sanctity of human life, about the provenance of human suffering and what causes people do commits such crimes. Save that for the ACLU.

When it comes down to the bottom line, when you choose to commit an act of piracy, you take on a liability, an assumed risk. Assume you can DIE during the commission of your crime. Taking these four people out won't hurt anyone, more likely, help. Do you people really think they aren't exploiting and harming their OWN people? They are. A thug is a thug is a THUG. A few Navy Seals dispatched early could have taken out these losers, rescued this Captain and the incident would have been over with very little attention.

If these ships insist on sailing to these places that harbor inhabitants that would rather kill an American rather than look at them, th

I like you Postmark55. I am glad you have a good home life.
I have a nice wife (I do the cooking though) and two lovely little cats.
One is called Zelda and the other Mr. Boots because he has long white legs that look like white boots.

Personally I am only against bad governments. The common people in all societies and cultures mostly are workers... who simply want to work.
I support the West but I also know there are many evil greedy men in the West as well.
Sinful behaviour is everywhere because of the fallen nature of man (that is, the 'fall' from the Adam and Eve story in the Holy Bible).
I know you people in China know Mr. Kevin Rudd.
Some of us see him as Chinas puppet.
He dreams of the Chinese way which makes him very open to the Chinese spy people in OZ.
In fact... I think that one day we may actually have a communist type of government, in at least some part of Australia, supported in those days by Mr. Rudds behaviour today.
We have had trouble in Australia with Labor government people who still cling to the 'old red communist thinking' that they learned in University and in the trade union movement.

Palo Alto.
The USA will remain a great superpower as long as she nevers lets herself fall into a sleep regarding China and Russia.
Both China and Russia (not the common peoples but the governments) conspire as they always have to over-throw the US, Britain and Australia/NZ because they want global control under that old Red flag.
In the secret backrooms in Moscow some still bow to that old Red global conquest dream.
The problem with the US, as I see it, is partly that she is tired from too many war fronts and is beginning to nod off...and partly because she has many weak politicians who dance where they want, with whom they want, regardless whether it be China or Russia, for money and glory.
Its the same problem here.
If the US honours God in prayer and in Christian Revival He will honour them.

I was not wild about George Bush in the end, though I do not blame him for 911. It happened on his watch, and his first response was appropriate. In the ensuing years, not so much.

China has flirted with Capitalism for 20 years, the West has never flirted with communism, thus of the two systems, capitalism is the one the people of the world crave. So China, recognising it got it wrong is now adopting the Western method of governance resulting in an economic boom.
Visit Shenzen province and once inside this mythical wonder world you will find the murky truth about the Chinese march on progres. Millions of fakes can be found wherever you look, handbags, watches, clothing, sunglasses all marked as top western brands like Louis Vitton, Dolce and Gabbana etc, and all of it made in the thousands of sweat shops within the province. Shenzen as one author put it, is a city of begger syndicates, drug traffickers and restaurants that serve lobster to Triad bosses dressed in fake Versace.China is the counterfeit capital of the world and law breaking has been intergrated into every part of their economy. Official figures will show that 13 000 workers are injured each year in Bao An with no payout systems for seriously injured workers. China is built on sweat shops, old machinery, no training, 14 hours per day, 450 yuan a month and ineffective safeguards is China's miracle.
But let us not believe that the west is some shining example of how things should be done, because that would be sheer ignorance. All we can say and based on the evidence, is that China is moving to a western way of life in terms of economic growth, infrastructure, freedom of movement etc whereas the west with it's clamp down on free speech, it's refusal to print close to the bone comments, it's over the top political correctness and the ban on so many social treats like smoking are signs of a move to a more controlling leadership. But for now, the West is the place the people of the world want to be which is why you will find millions of Chinese in Australia,Canada, America, New Zealand and Europe. Even second world places like South America and South Africa are home to China towns. I

I have no comprehension of what you imagine makes America so great. You have a large amount of land and a smaller population. You have not suffered through the ravages of war as China has. You do not have the natural disasters China has, nor the population or climate figures that makes it ripe for diseases. Life in China is by nature intensely competitive and many people cannot cut it here.
What is intersting though, is that they always seem to cut it wherever they land eh.

These kids choose a Maritime career over the Navy. They are not trained like the military yet they faced off in a battle standoff of life or death.

And over food aid and supplies to help Africa.
One of our guys may still die, but Africa will get its free food.

No, there won't be a day without trolls until the comments are cleansed of Jewish commenters and all that remains are anti-Zionists,
because instead of defending Lynne and I, for example, or simply making a statement that there is nothing "filthy Jew", or "foul jewish" about me or Lynne, you say nothing;
and so the likes of Postmark, D'este and Rob Bennett and others are appeased.

Ironically, the daily trash about me gives me some tiny sense of the horror it must have been to be Jewish in Europe sixty years ago. How did they wake up every morning and want to live? Maybe that's why they lined up and walked into freight cars and then gas chambers. They were already dead from disgust.
Not being Jewish, I never understood that until this morning.

No Carolyn, not a death threat, just some sound advice that you should heed, for like I said earlier, you have some serious head problems, at least Lynne, the one you claim to be friends with, has common sense and doesn't live a life of fantasy, like feeling like a Jew being put to death by the Nazis, and Lynne also has some courtesy, you're just an over inflated wind bag who thinks she's a writer and you're as rude as they come.
And when you said tiny sense, you were blowing your own horn, for it is well known on these threads that you haven't got the slightest bit of sense, none what so ever.

Thanks double dog, Dennis says hi in return, and I feel the need to set Carolyn straight, she always accuses me of deleting her comments and of attempting to delete them, but that would be rather difficult since I reside in China and I'm the one that's had thousands of posts of mine deleted and I've lost count at how many times I've been banned, at least 20 in the past week alone, and God only knows how many times before that, so I've been in a snarly mood as of late, and the last thing I need is to have a windbag like Carolyn accusing me of censorship.
Dennis still says you're his favourite uncle though, so that should count for something.

This is what's come of negotiating with these terrorists. It's time to quit that and blow them out of the water. If they take a ship, blow that out of the water too. Then get some undercover in and find out where the pirates live, and blow their houses sky high for good measure.

They'll soon get sick of pirating if we respond that way.
57

Americanbob,

11/04/2009 15:27:52
#56, 2dogs. Don't know that convoys would work, probably just scare the pirates off to pick of solo ships. Best answer would be to re-introduce Q ships.
These operated during the second world war, they were heavily armed converted merchant ships with the weaponry concealed. they were designed to draw in enemy surface raiders and submarines and once within range covers came off the guns and they let fly.
This may not stop piracy but it would sure as hell give some of the pirates sore heads!
58

Nice try,

#57 Cutty Sark,
Well you need to look at the situation and why it is that the pirates are indeed pirates. These same pirates were fishermen at one time but the international community came in and wiped out their fish stocks by over fishing with their floating fish factories, so they needed to do something about that and when they first started retaliating by committing piracy, they soon found out that it was a good way to replace the money they lost when their fish stocks were depleted, and that brings us to today's scenario, so again, it's a case of the little guy fighting back the only way he knows how, and it's been extremely successful up to date. So as has been the case everywhere, the real terrorists are the ones who started it all, but the ones retaliating are being labeled the terrorists, a very unfair label to pin on them in my opinion.

Here's some history on the Somali pirate industry and their weapons.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piracy_in_Somalia

AKM rifle, Russian made,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AKM

RPG-7, American made,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RPG-7

TT-30 semi-automatic pistol, Russian made
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TT_pistol

The RGD-5 hand grenade, Russian made
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RGD-5

And the F1 hand grenade, also Russian made
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F1_grenade

So it's plain to see that both the Americans and Russians have provided the weapons the pirates are using, reap what you sow.

The Somalis are neither Brave or Stupid, just desperate. Their profession of piracy has been based on survival since they come from one of the worst places in the world. Now having their hostage they know their only chance to survive is to keep him alive. The situation is bleak for them and if I were a fellow pirate in a neighboring boats, I would be the first one to lauch a grenade into their lifeboat as they have brought international attention to an area that will not be wiped clean of pirates over the next year now. They have leveraged all pirates to their selfish cause. If pirates want to unify and show their strength, then they should take these pirates out and rescue the captain, otherwise, they have all signed their death sentence.
Bravery is the Captain who gave offered himself to his captives for the release of his crew. This type of bravery shows the American spirit.

I've read some sick comments in my time but Carolyn's at 47 really takes the biscuit."

Have no doubt Finnking that I realize and do acknowledge your lack of compassion, and your inability to understand that others do indeed have compassion for people they never met. One expression that is common enough is, "to put yourself in someone else's shoes."

That said, I have for decades been trying to come to terms why the Jews of Europe did not rebel in masses against the Nazis, and it was not until this morning when I read the usual dirty jew comments left me on multiple if not every article, that it occurred to me, if you endured denigration for twenty years and in fact under law were required to wear it on your sleeve, you might lose the will to live, and in fact prefer death.

But then, you've never been called a filthy Jew on a daily basis, and have no desire to emphasize- so how could you even for a moment understand the expression, "to put oneself in someone else shoes?"

If we fail to understand what it was that got us to this point, of a world teetering on the edge of self-destruction, how are we ever going to cure it never mind save it? If we don't find the answer, we all die, if not from war then from starvation.

Interesting:

a) THe type of commenters above who do not have "report Unsuitable",and

b) The comments that have been deleted that tended to show Carolyn for the clearly deluded deranged nasty little anti semite she is.

It's been like this for years on this site. The paper wants US advertising and US feeds, so us Europeans, who actually had the horror of wars and anti-semitism, cannot crit Israel or the opinions of those who cynically exploit the sympathy aroused by the holocaust for their own puerile point scoring. See Carolyn's 47: the most ugly piece of Holocaust exploitation I think i've ever read.

I'm glad nobody can ask for it to be deleted other than Carolyn; there it stands as testament to how she tries to draw sympathy by comparing her trifling troubles with the horror of those who died in the Holocaust. Note, too, that my comment pointing her crassness was deleted.

Bad times continue at Johnson Press plc, I hear. Can't understand why, ahem. Perhaps if it was more concerned with Scottish, 'uk' and European audiences and less with US advert revenue/opinion/limitation of free speech and thought etc, it would be in a better position.

As for the paper, I wrote a letter a few weeks ago and thanked the Scotsman for their cultural and historical library they make available, because I use it and enjoy it. But it is true our Scotland literary and art programs have a quite a drop in applications for both Stirling and Edinburgh this year and may be canceled. Ireland has been canceled already for no registration. The kids want to go to Greece. Not Scotland.
Kids are attuned to art and culture- Maybe they need another Braveheart kind of movie to get their interest back to Scotland.
As for the nasty and communist comments, I wrote that everyone who knows Scotland, knows Scots are not like what is posted here.

If your precious comment above is deleted, I'll repost it for you Finnking. No need to cry wolf.
As for my post being anti-Semitic: That's fresh. Evidently English in Finland is different than English in Massachusetts because I think everyone knows what I meant... that I wasn't alive in 1944, glass bead game aside.

#69 That is a good strategy and it worked against the pirates in the South China seas. China has a long history with piracy and the only way they were defeated was to destroy their land bases.
Let me tell you, though, why it won't happen.
The west is too squeamish. It doesn't want to see poor folks bombed, and the Israelis are not affected here. The Israelies have the US and Europe by the painful bits over the holocaust, which is WHY they will never let anyone talk about it. Capiche? The west no longer lauds its war heros, or, the war heros it chooses are not soldiers who actually do the killing. It likes the heros that get caught and end up as hostages, or the ones that rescue dogs.
Now I will tell you why they should not do what you suggest:
For years now the US has been supporting the Ethipoians in their war in Somalia. It has prevented any strong government coming into power because they would be a muslim. This has led to the lawlessness in the areas that you see now becoming piracy.
It is all very well for you to say the "world" should go in with guns blazing but there are 250 innocent people being held has hostage. Until now the pirates have been peaceful and not deliberately harmed their hostages. You seem to imagine that if you slap them the pirates will leave with their tails between their legs. You don't know that at all. Take a look at what is happening thesedays in Mexico and learn a lesson from it. This current situation is a direct result of the US's empire building. We, the rest of the world, would really rather NOT have it put our people at further risk. These ships carry cargo with ten, if not hundreds of millions of dollars. A few extra million to pass through that way is not too much for them to fork out. They will just pass the negligible cost on to the customers who, if there had to be some sort of large full scale assault on somalia would have to pay by way of taxes anyway. It will not be long before the economy in this area is in complete
98

Mashimaro,

China 12/04/2009 03:38:56
#80 Good post! Yes, these pirates should just be brave enough to give it up, and they are being selfish by calling others in to help them. I don't know if the other pirates are able to get within striking range of the lifeboat, however, and whether or not by doing so they will be putting their own boats and hostages in jeopardy. I have a feeling the "war" ships are blocking them.

(Look out, Carolyn or whatever the real name is has sent her daughter out to fornicate with members of the Boston FBI) #110 Troll snatcher

My daughter was pursuing a degree as a police psychologist, and to work with victims needing counseling. Her best friend speaks a few Chinese dialects and was recruited by the government because of it. So I guess you can say the apple did not drop far from the tree in our collected view of an anti-china stance.

China, instead of feeding Africa, is arming and weaponizing Africa, and the pirates.

Although we hope he can do it, we know that one lone American captain of the Alabama, cannot stop these pirates. We are very proud to say he's from the neighborhood.
As I said above, Every day is a longer day of anxiety as we wait

It's time we stop sending aid to Africa if it endangers the crew of these vessels
