ALEX Salmond prompted a new rift with Westminster yesterday when it emerged the UK government has now signed a deal with Libya which could pave the way for the transfer of prisoners to the North African country.
The First Minister is determined that Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, the Lockerbie bomber who is in jail in Scotland, is not part of any deal. He has been seeking an "exclusion clause" from Westminster.

However, it emerged over the weekend that Libya has ratified the deal without such an exclusion clause in place. Mr Salmond criticised Westminster for pushing ahead against the wishes of the Scottish Government.

A spokesman for Jack Straw, the UK Justice Secretary, said an exclusion clause was not necessary because Westminster could not transfer Megrahi without the express approval of the Scottish Government.

We know that Blair wanted Megrahi transferred don't we and we know why? If the appeal goes successful ahead some very shocking truths may emerge, which would call into question the conduct of many over the tragedy that happened in the skies over Lockerbie.

The next appeal termin is on the 20th February 2008 at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Any moves to transfer Megrahi before his appeal will only suggest that justice will never be done.
The justice system will never recover from such a move.

It will remain to be seen if SNP will value the deal with BP over the lives of the victims who deserve a proper hearing and truth.
The families of the dead are the ones left in limbo please don't let them down.

Justice must prevail,= Proper Appeal before any moves

As a resident of Lockerbie who was there in the first minutes and helped pick up many of the victims I am disgusted with the political posturing that is all about oil reserves and trading with Libya.

Megrahi should stay in prison for life. He is the finger on the arm that stretches back to Libya and its leader, a known sponsor of terrorism.

Alex Salmond is well aware that Scotland is a stateless nation, and therefore has no say in what the U.K. unitary state decides regarding al-Megrahi.

How exactly is Alex Salmond promting a new rift with Westminster?

It's westminster who have been doing deals behind other peoples backs, even though they had earlier denied it.

This has now become public, as first Minister is Salmond supposed to sit back and say nothing.

If it had beena Tory government doing this, then Labour and their cronies in the media, would have been shouting about it and urging Salmond to get involved even more and if he didn't they would then try to crucify him.

And they know it.

Sorry gwp 6# I for one just don't believe Megrahi had anything to do with it and it is unlikely you could find a jury that could be persuaded of that either.
What I find even more implausible is that on this occasion I have to agree with Jack Straw!

How can you claim that Salmond prompted a new rift. He is just trying to protect the status quo. The instigators in this are the UK Government. They are the ones prompting the rift. Please stop spinning the facts in order to bash the SNP.

it would seem that there is a lot of doubt about this case, the person concerned should be allowed to check all evidence through his legal team.
something has stunk about this business right from the start.
I have a feeling some people have knowledge of what really went on.
I have never believed this person was guilty.
