SIR Menzies Campbell last night refused to be drawn on speculation that MPs are rallying round him to become the next Speaker.
The former Liberal Democrat leader has been tipped for the Commons' most senior post by Labour and Lib Dem MPs.

Vince Cable, the Lib Dems' economy spokesman, fuelled the speculation by saying he would support his candidacy. Sir Menzies declined to comment on the reports.

However, another Lib Dem source said: "Ming would make a fantastic speaker; he has the right temperament for it and would enjoy the job. But he may wish to hang on and see whether he can take a ministerial post in a coalition government."

However, a Conservative Party source made it clear that the Tories wanted to put forward their own candidate.

Michael Martin, the current Speaker, has waded into controversy over the arrest of the senior Tory Damian Green and the search of his Commons office.

Mr Martin is expected to announce he is standing down from his post before the next election.

Refresh your memory you lot!
Was'nt Ming the merciless instrumental in STOPPING the Liberal (Scottish version) Party from even thinking abut a coalition with the SNP ,in the hope he would be rewarded by Gordon brown with some nice little sinecure?
Lest we forget!!

An honourable man for an honourable position in the House of Commons so a worthy choice, if made, for sure.

#6 Iliberal for Life what do you make of comments that Clegg is ready to jump into bed with Brown and form a government of National Unity to cope with the recession?

Aye, right enough post 5.

Just another back stabbing toadie. A treacherous, self serving, unionist establishment cretin.

One would have thought that even Westmidden would have had enough of those. Apparently not.

Mind you, it hasn't been written on stone yet.

After all we are all quite aware of the worth of a Westmidden promise, aren't we.

...and credibility is some thing of a scarcity in Westmidden, along with integrity and accountability. That's for sure.

I'd take this gossup as with anything Westmidden wishes us to swallow;

with a large pinch of salt.

You said it before me. However this looks like Ming's payback from Broon and NewLab for the Lib-Lab Unionist agreement they had to do down the SNP. Ming being the man who stopped the FibDums going into coalition with the SNP, sticking to his British Nationalist fundamentalism and hatred of any possibility of Scottish Nationhood.

British before Scottish; that's the real definition of a Unionist (aka British Nationalist).

#11 We can all be thankful that we didn't go into coalition with them. Consensus minority government works better than contrived alliances for shared privileges.
