Published Date: 14 October 2008
THE Conservatives yesterday insisted they were the "safe choice" for voters as the party's by-election got under way in Fife.
Maurice Golden, the Tory candidate in Glenrothes, was flanked by Annabel Goldie, MSP, the Scottish party's leader, and David Mundell, MP, the shadow secretary of state, on walkabout in neighbouring Markinch, Fife, yesterday at the launch of their campaign.

It came as Labour in the Commons formally launched the critical 6 November by-election campaign.

Government business managers moved the writ for the poll to take place in the next-door constituency to that of Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister. It came nearly three months after Labour crashed to defeat in its Glasgow East stronghold on a 22.53 per cent swing to the Scottish National Party.

Mr Golden, 28, an environmental campaign manager from Newport in north-east Fife, said: "We want to show that we are the safe choice, and the effective choice for the people of Glenrothes."

He said the biggest concern among local people stemmed from economic turmoil in the financial markets. "People are worried about their pensions, people are worried about their savings and people are worried about their jobs. The backdrop to all that of course is the economic crisis that's currently engulfing both the United Kingdom and also the world."

Peter Grant, the SNP candidate, said: "We have the message and the momentum to win this by-election, but we will never take the support of local people for granted."

The Westminster seat became vacant following the death of John MacDougall, the Labour MP who commanded a majority of 10,664.

The other candidates declared to date are Lindsay Roy, (Lab), Harry Wills (Lib Dem), Morag Balfour (Scottish Socialists) and Kris Seunarine (UK Independence Party).

What a stupid, stupid thing to say. What does it even mean? It is mental health week, apparently but that is no excuse.

What's that old saying ... there are none so blind as those that cannot see? Describes the Tories in Scotland to a T, doesn't it?

With them around, we won't need a candidate from the Monster Raving Loony Party ... the Tories ARE them as far as most sane Scots are concerned!

I'm sure our even-handed "national newspaper" will be offering the SNP a similar soapbox any time soon.

You can't blame them. They must think we are all bampots. How else do you explain decades of Liebour support? Luckily, Scots are see-ing the light in their droves. The SNP, should they win this seat, will give Westminster a clear message. The Scottish people want change.

What they don't want to see is appalling figures like Baron Mandy, his pockets overflowing with tax-payers money, slithering back onto the domestic political scene.Scots are sick to the back teeth of being taken for granted.

When you consider the only viable option would then be the "hooray henries" of the tory party , you can understand why the SNP and their supporters are upbeat and optimistic compared to the shambles which is, the opposition.

Very refreshing for Cameron to go to East Glasgow and basically tell people to get off their backsides and go to work - not an option for any parties that think they might actually win, though.

It Scottish Tories where as smart as they where rare the might consider a little strategic voting.

With Gordon running around Downing Street in his "I saved The World" t-shirt, Butchers Apron Underpants and Union Flag Cape. He might just call a General Election if he where to pull off a Win in Glenrothes.

After all he knows this is his last chance, before people realize he created the mess in the first place

#19 Number 6: " They are and will remain, a political non event north of the border until the country is independent. Then, they and Liebour can form Scottish conservative and Labour parties ."

Buy the Nationalists already fulfil the role of Tartan Tories (wanting to build a business friendly separatist Scotland as they do), and they seemed to have no problem attracting traditional solid Labour voters in Glasgow East, so what need would there be for Scottish Conservative and Labour parties post separation?

Nationalists have the ability to be all things to all men just now, but their leadership must know that the separation policy is an albatross round their necks in the current financial crisis. If the Nats are really serious about Glenrothes, they'll have to gloss over the voter unfriendly separation policy and make a serious bid to join the agenda of the mainstream parties. Am I right or am I right!

the SNP are there to promote independence, and build up Scottish self confidence. They are a party fighting Scotland's corner. That is non-negotiable.

You should realise that everyone else is just there to get their snouts in the trough, power at all costs.

Kipling,

More info. 14/10/2008 12:58:12
Glenrothes adds up to 123. Is this significant?

Summary (indeed most of the info. on the internet) of the two main contenders and a nice lady (who seems to have the most info about things she has done):

Peter Grant is, appropriately enough for his name, an accountant who worked in the public sector internal audit until May 2007. He's a local man, now leader of Fife Council. “Peter has campaigned for years on local issues such as tolls on the Forth and Tay bridges, now abolished by the SNP. Fife Council, led by Peter Grant, has frozen the council tax, after it had risen by 61% under Labour." says Central Fife MSP Tricia Marwick on an SNP site. He's married to Fiona, always a good name to be associated with.

Another local 'standing' for the post is Morag Balfour, for The Scottish Socialist Party, who has been a candidate in the constituency before. "Morag joined the SSP in 2000 and has been involved in defending workers’ rights, the SSP’s campaigns for Free School Meals, Free Public Transport, and Free Prescriptions. She is currently a volunteer in a befriending scheme which reaches out to young people recently released from Polmont Young Offenders Institute. Where such schemes exist, reoffending rates have been shown to drop. A practicing Quaker, Morag is committed to developing structures and policies to bring about peaceful, nonviolent and environmentally sustainable answers to the difficulties facing the world today." (More on the SSP site.)

Maurice Golden, an outsider, who won't be around locally to be jeered or cheered when he goes shopping, is "an Environmental Campaigns Manager for Keep Scotland Beautiful and firmly believes we must continue to reduce, re-use and recycle our waste" according to a Tory site. The same site comments on "[A]t the 2007 Scottish Parliamentary Election Maurice was selected to fight the seat of Central Fife. He fought a positive campaign on local issues". But doesn't say what these issues were.

#21 Oh dear shredder , you seem to have fallen for Liebour's "Tartan tory" tag ,thrown at the SNP. You don't seriously think people believe that .... Do you ?.

Scare tactics and stupid accusations are all the Unionista parties have in their arsenal. Very similar to the republicans in America. But just like there, here people are taking politics more seriously. They have seen what a republican administration has done to their country and are rejecting them out of hand.

Same here, Scots are sick of voting for Liebour decade
after decade, only to be left with officially.. "Some of the most deprived areas in Europe".

The Tories are not a serious option in Scotland so people realise looking after our own affairs is the best way forward . Am I right? or are you one of those people who think Scotland is exclusivley unable to look after itself. If not, then why on earth would any Scot want to vote Liebour, Fib dems or that other lot ?.
28

Shredder,

14/10/2008 14:58:36
#27 Number 6: what's your view of Catalonian nationalism, or the movement in Quebec? It's simply not the case that Scotland is "exclusively unable to look after itself": where would it all end if national regions all over the world broke away from their parent countries on the say so of misguided fanatics like you?

I'm impressed with Brown and Darling over the management of this crisis. NOW i think its time to talk about second careers. Either of these two MP's would make a great First Minister, considering the solution they have just delivered looks set to be adopted by the USA. Very impressive.

But if i was in Glenrothes I'd vote Conservative, just as a message. The two protagonist parties of the Labour and SNP are just the same people engaged in what seems to be a series of personal rivalries (how little things have changed).

Send a message to the Labour/SNP professional polictians that Glenrothes and Scotland wants a change in deliverables not speeches - VOTE CONSERVATIVE.

The tories will secretly want to the snp to win this one.

That way any momentum Brown has build up, blaming others for his economic incompetence, will be destroyed.

Hopefully the snp can get a good win, as they are the best party in scotland by a country mile. We cannot just remain in this failing union any longer to satisfy the career ambitions of broon.

Sometimes I wonder how you come to your conclusions. Brown has been a complete disaster for Britain and even worse for Sotland. How anyone could think he is good is beyond me. Much of this economic crisis has been caused by Brown and his complete ineptness. Quite simply Britain is feeling the worst of this crisis becuase of the mess he got us into.
37

Shredder,

14/10/2008 16:57:52
#30 Number 6: the fact that Scotland was independent in the early eighteenth century is neither here nor there. The fact remains that the separation movement in Scotland is most readily compared to the movements in Quebec and Catalonia, whether you like it or not.

It is not comparable, for example, to the situation of countries forced into the former Soviet Union or Yugoslavia after the second world war and you know deep down as well as I do that Scottish nationalism is based on misplaced sentiment rather than any overwhelmingly convincing social or economic case.

# 35 Alan B,

You mean a small group of English nationalist Tories will want the SNP to win, not the bulk of the Conservation Party.

# 36 Alan B,

I bet Brown wishes he was powerful enough to even cause this problem - but he is just not.

Yet i'm starting to get the feel of an election in devolved Scotland. Its more like French Mayoral election than a Westminster election.

Even if the candidate has been the President of France he is still harassed over parking in the main square. He might have been busy running the country whilst Algeria became independent - but no - parking at the town square that's what should have been sorted out.

I have lot 'more' respect for French politicians these days and understand more the stance they have to take. Even though what might be good for France and the EU needs to be done it is little good if you completely lose your seat over parking in the main square.

So its going to be interesting, VERY INTERESTING to see how Scotland/Glenrothes handles international successful Gordan Brown, while the SNP Alex.S are arguing over parking.

No. I think the uk tories party in general will want a snp victory. Why becuase it makes it significantly more likely Cameron will win the next election.

Brown has got a bizzare bounce from his own incompetence. If he loses this by election in his own back yard the london media will again turn against him. At the moment everyone is so worried about the mess and Cameron does not want to get blamed for slating brown and making any uk recovery worse.

43

Alan B,

14/10/2008 19:34:17
#danielrober

If you think Brown is successful then you either have ridiculously low standards or you are playing silly polical games.

Anyone with any clue about economics knows he has been a disaster.

As for saying he has no responsibility for the current crisis. That is just ridiculous.

It was Brown that deliberately ran up huge public sector debts in the good times. Giving us the fiscal mess we now find ourselves in. That was grossly stupid.

It was Brown that allowed the huge and unrestrained growth in personal credit by not controlling house price inflation. Again that was complete negligent. The whole issue of banks failing is due to them expanding mortage lending far too much and paying for it from the credit markets. With controlled house price inflation mortage lending would have been about half what it is today. The banks would then not be so exposed as they could have financed these mortages from deposits.

It really is not rocket science.

And finally Brown removed responsibility for regulated the financial markets from the BOE. Within a few yrs the whole system has come crashing down. He has been a complete failure. Compare his regulation to that of say Australia. Compare his lack of control of mortgage lending to that of Germany.

The guy is a complete buffoon.

You story is also an insult. Salmond is not arguing over parking but the economic wellbeing of scotland. That you feel that scotland economic wellbeing is so low a priorty and can be compared to parking say more about you. Is it your view that jobs only matter if they are in london, because that is how it comes across.
