GORDON Chisholm, the Queen of the South manager, insists making a piece of Scottish football history is not beyond his players when they travel to Denmark for the second leg of their Uefa Cup second qualifying round tie against Nordsjaelland.
Last season's Scottish Cup runners-up were the architects of their own downfall in last night's first leg in Airdrie, cheaply conceding the first-half goals scored by Benjamin Kibebe and Patrice Bernier which leaves them with a 2-1 deficit to recover in Denmark on 26 August.

No Scottish club has ever won a European tie after losing the first leg at home, but while Chisholm was exasperated by the manner of his team's defeat last night he remained bullish about their prospects of turning it around in the return fixture.

"It is going to be difficult, no-one would doubt that," said Chisholm. "Difficult yes, but not impossible. The way we went about in the second half tonight, the tie is not dead. I felt we deserved a draw tonight. It wasn't our football or attacking play that killed us, it was our defending.

"I'd been banging on for three or four days before this game about the need to concentrate at the back. I told our goalkeeper and defenders that it was about keeping a clean sheet tonight, nothing else. Anything else was a bonus. We definitely shot ourselves in the foot, giving away a goal in the first two minutes and then another soft one after we had equalised. You just can't do that at this level."

Morten Wieghorst, the Nordsjaelland coach, felt his team should have put the tie completely out of Queen of the South's reach but the former Celtic and Dundee midfielder was nonetheless satisfied with the position they have put themselves in ahead of the second leg.

"With a bit more composure in the second half, when I thought we were a bit sloppy with the ball, we would have killed the tie," said Wieghorst. "We are in the driving seat but we still have a job to do to finish it off. I will make sure the players don't think it is all over. I underlined to them before the game that it was important not to underestimate Queen of the South. People back home were saying we just had to turn up and win, because they hadn't heard of this team, but I knew any Scottish team would battle hard.

"Overall, I'm very pleased with the result. Getting the first goal after two minutes was a real bonus, it was something I didn't expect to happen from a corner kick against a Scottish team who are good in the air."

MATCH REPORT: Queen of the South 1-2 Nordsjaelland

#2 KT, Loovens set to sign for the Champions Celtic looks like we got him. I watched him play against us in our friendly with Cardiff and he looks solid enough.

I wonder how the permaragers will take this if he does sign for us? Seems he want's to play in CL and the last time I looked that would be us AGAIN.

Pretty cool being a Tim these days.

Only a QOS thread to comment on good luck to them but this is way beyond their level

Thank goodness the SFA are going to stop the cup runners up qualifying for Europe it is embarrassing getting knocked out by teams from Sweden Iceland and the Republic and now Denmark .

As for Rangers I could do a four paragraph thread about them but no matter what I said could be summed up in the following

TEE HEE SNIGGER SNIGGER

Who's it gonna be and KT? No one has mentioned it yet if and it's a big if, did rearangers get the full 7.8mil for Carlos Cuellar or was there a sell on clause. Did a portion of that 7.8mil go to Ossana?

It would seem strange for Ossana not to include a sell on clause similar to Kenny M's when they sold him to rearangers. If rearangers then sold him on within such a short period would they be entitled to a cut of that transfer, less money for ws if that‘s the case.

Where are the journalists when you need them?

Have the scotsman stopped Celtic and Rangers threads right enough ? Man... that was the only thing worth reading. Still you expect it after you get hundreds of copy and paste slagging entries. The knuckle draggers win again. At least you can comment on the BBC. QoS ..plucky but pointless. It does scotland no good to have a team like that representing them in europe no matter how misty eyed the small team fans get at the thought of the underdog doing a spot of giant killing. We can't get a decent run from third and fourth in the SPL in Europe so a bunch of part timers that can't play on their own ground shouldn't be there. Its not even on merit...you lost the cup final. At least Raith actually won in the 90s.

To all rangers fans that paraded down the streets waving their champs flags after last springs 1-0 win at ibrox.... we were right. Your team is rubbish, your manager is rubbish, your style is rubbish and your signings are rubbish. And i laugh at the thought of the 10 pounds or every fiver celtic spend memory because thats why you are now rubbish. Murray must stay.

Re your comments on QoS not being fit to play in Europe - thus far they have scored as many as Rangers did and it is Rangers not QoS who have let Scotland down if anything as no-one had any expectation at all for Queens...

Whereas oh it's such a travesty for Rangers to be out of Europe - as if they have some God given right to a walkover against Hearts reserves...

Of course all Scottish teams are "diddy" clubs in the big picture including the Old Firm...

Sadly, Celtanda will be just as successful in the Champions League as Rearrangers have been been...

How I'd love to see QoS turn it around in Denmark though it's probably a longer shot than Rangers ever actually scoring again in a Eurtopean home tie..

Queens - in Europe on merit - runners up just like Rangers - Motherwell still to get started but, unfortunately four diddy teams in Europe from Scotland - the same as every year...

Tea break's over back on your heads...

In answer to #1's question about the Scotsman being late etc, etc, it because its an East Coast paper, not a West coast paper. They concentrate on their local teams, not Scotland’s Sectarian Shame. When they do report of them its usually accurate and to the point.

As for not letting people comment on the terrible two's stories, it because of bigoted knuckle draggers clogging up the threads with their hate and vitriol.

Which brings me to why are the troglodytes commenting on a QOS thread? They did really well last night, though I do agree that it will be better for Scotland when we don't allow smaller teams to damage our UEFA co-efficient.

Teams like QOS, Gretna and Dunfermline, along with Hibs in the Interdiddy Cup the last few seasons. It doesn't do us any good at all.

I posted the other week about the performances of Irish league sides catching up with SPL and was derided. Seriously the team that beat Hibs 4-0 on aggregate could only draw 2-2 at home against an Irish side last night and Drogeda only narrowly lost to Dynamo Kiev while Rangers lost to Lithuania. QOS will undoubtedly be eliminated and I cant be too optimisitc about Motherwll. Terrible perormance in Europe this year compared to last.

1/ Yes I am
2/ No they are not, Hertz can be just as bad as Scotlands Shame, its just that the rest don't get the exposure as the two Weggie clubs do. And before you say anything, Hibs have a small hard core as well.

Examples are: the troglodytes in Manchester (both inside and outside the stadium), Northern Ireland flags (its a Scottish Club, not Irish) and their anti-Pope chants

Irish Flags )again its a Scottish Club, not Irish) and pro IRA songs at Celtic Park.

Getting a little heavy on the usual division today.

Firstly not a bad performance from QoS last night, however the points made about the smaller teams representing the SPL/SFA in Europe are well made and do not do our league any good, the runners up spot in the cup must surely now go to the 4th place in the SPL.

As fr the sectarian comments about Celtic, yes there are a fair few among us who believe that a united Ireland is a just cause. Is that Sectarian? (Genuine question) I believe that it is , the same as I believe that all of the former British Colonies that have been returned to independent states have been justified, (Zimbabwe I know is not a good example)

The difference between Sectarian and political I will leave to others to decide, but my reasoning is not religous but more based on history and politics.

The current state of affairs in NI is about as acceptable as it will ever be, and should be left well enough alone and allow the people to live side by side and in peace.

Many of the songs sung at Celtic Park over the years can be debated to death about sectarian overtones, however to be fair to celtic they have virtually eradicated all of the religious songs within the confines of the ground and to a slighlty lesser extent at away grounds. Rangers are at least trying to do this now.

The political songs that refer to the historic Easter Rising etc cannot be described as sectarian, what can be raised though is the suitability of these songs at a football match. Would anybody condemn Nelson Mandela or any of the ANC for singing their political songs.

The same applys to the Rangers fans songs not just Celtic's.

However there has been much progress on both sides and it needs to continue.

There was a report today about how happy Scots were. I'd be a lot happier if Celtic and Rangers fans would stop hacking on and on about who is the most sectarian, etc etc. Both clubs are trying to move on and all other fans think the clubs look pathetic banging on about it.

It's a game of football can we talk about football?

So, David Murray - he talks a good game, he just hasn't delivered recenty. He brought back the tactically limited Smith I doubt if even a league win could save his job. Smith prided himself on his results with Scotland in Europe but it was obvious that these results were mainly down to the players. He's been found out in Europe.

Oh, it's a Queen of the South thread isn't it. Bad luck the Dumfriesians, but it's not over.

He had a very good season last year, this year with the accolades that came his way in the press for his first season, my opinion on the lad was that he was starting to believe everything being written about him.

Last season was TFC first in the league and we were p!sh, to put it mildly, and he did stand out amongst the mediocrity that the team fielded.

He seems to be selected regularly for the USA squad, but I think his form has dipped a bit this season.

He is a young player who was a star at the university level and has a lot of potential.

The transfer system here is unique, in that the MLS together with the club sanction transfer deals, it really is a strange set up.

Mea Culpa, 68

OK, OK you weren’t making that argument and I apologise but why even bring up the description of Ireland as “the UK's closest neighbour and significant trading partner” as if (underlined) to justify Irish flags at Celtic Park.

Your other point – I’m afraid that everything needs a justification, even if it is just to satisfy someone’s curiosity.

You wondered if there would be the same level of hysteria if Celtic fans flew Iceland/Sweden/Denmark flags. Of course there wouldn’t be but there would be a lot of people wondering why. If I see a Sweden flag at a Celtic game, I wouldn’t think that someone has randomly brought a Swedish flag with them, I would surmise that it may have something to do with Henrik Larsson. All quite logical.

If an Aberdeen fan was carrying a Jamaican flag would no-one stop to think why?

Of course it is pitiful that Irish flags at Parkhead need to be justified to some people when it is quite obvious that everyone knows the reason. I would say anyone still asking or complaining about that is just trying to get a reaction.

Peace.

Mendes signing should add a bit of quality to the midfield. More to come I hope.

BEMUSED EXILE,

I reckon that Mendes signing, along with the recent captures of Aaron and Bougherra, have definitely improved the depth and quality of the squad. Mendes and Aaron in particular should give us a bit of Latin flair, while Bougherra should minimise the impact of Cuellar's loss.

SDM and WS however, should definitely have acted earlier, which would surely have allowed us to squeeze past Kaunas, and I still can't understand the three signings up front that preceded all of this.

All in all, however, I think the squad is taking shape, and with no European distractions, I'm optimistic of mounting a real challenge in the SPL.

I think Bain has to shoulder some of the responsibility in transfers moving slowly, especially for players in the midfield.

With Davis my thoughts are the closer Fulham got to their season opener and with no movement for Davis from other clubs, Bain thought he could get him on the cheap, as surplus requirements at Craven Cottage.

More midfield help is needed and if more quality is signed, the return of injured players to come, the league is wide open, and will again be a race to the finish.
