Advocaat backs Miller for Rangers success

Published Date: 08 July 2008
FORMER Rangers manager Dick Advocaat insists Kenny Miller will be a "good" signing second time around – even though he offloaded the Scotland international seven years ago.
Advocaat brought Miller to Rangers from Hibernian in June 2000 on a five-year contract, for a fee of £2million. However, the striker moved to Wolves the following season after failing to hold down a first-team place.

After experiencing mixed fortunes at Celtic and Derby County, Miller controversially returned to Ibrox last month.

Advocaat believes the 28-year-old Miller is now a different prospect.

He said: "I signed him from Hibs when he was young but there was too much competition at the time. He is more experienced now, has done well for the national team and will be a good player for Rangers."

The former Ibrox manager also denied reports linking him with Celtic striker Derek Riordan.

Asked if he was interested in Riordan, Advocaat said: "Who? Is that the player who plays on the left-hand side? It is not true. I will be signing maybe only one or two players and they will probably be Russian."

Well good to see the Scotsman has got their facts wrong....it was McLeish who made the decision to sell Kenny to Wolves for £3m not the wee general.

I think overall Dick was a good judge of player, the only problem was the transfer fees that were paid in some cases were ridiculous. As for Flo will always remember his first goal for the club when we tonked Celtc FC 5-1....happy days!

All hail the little genital.

Of COURSE Kenny will be a great signing, he'll chase the ball down to the corner flags (where his first touch has placed it) and give the team 100% effort.

Just another manager in the long list of the Murray mutually consented.

#18 - here is a wee quiz for you chucky - how many of those players helped thump celtic 3-0 in the first old firm game of the season? its hardly insightful to produce a list like that, and its something that has been flogged to death by both sides of the OF.

back to the story. if KM is a flop you celtic boys can all come on here and tell us how you predicted it. trouble being, the only way is up, and you must be keiching yourselves that he will get a few against your team

#19, 20 It took Kenny Miller 11 games to score his first goal for the Champions, THATS how patient we were.

The fact that he stuck it in the net right in front of the vein popping SS support was indeed sweet.

His celebration was also quite memorable, doubt that lightning will strike twice but you never know, the odds must be the same.

He's no even played for you yet and you're screaming / singing abuse at him.

Happy days.

#31 The only reason you were within sniffing distance of the 3 times Champions was due to the freakish nature of all the full backs and keeper around Christmas time.

That won't happen again, 4 in a row will be easier than 3.

#34 simply a pest "On what evidence so far do you assume that celtic are going to improve?"

As it stands we have a squad that will win the league. We finished strongly when the positions were filled with players natural to them.

If we sign players it will be for Europe.

#46 Why do you get all bothered about our away record in the CL? Having a FORTRESS is the way we prefer it, only Barca can better us there. Nine points from 3 home wins = £10 Million kerrrrching!!!!!

I'd be more concerned about your rabbles inability to beat any of the top 6 in the SPL away from home if I were you hahahaha.

4 in a row coming your way soon.

We have nothing to fear. Even if we don't sign a single player in the close season, we will still have a fine team, whilst Wattie is scrambling around trying to piece together a team in a market where inflation has taken hold.
41

Rosscobhoy,

On the subject of Miller, he is rubbish and has been found out everywhere he plays. He'll work hard and score a couple of goals but is not good enough to play at the level that Celtic or Rearangers should be aiming for. He is a very poor version of Nacho Novo. Same work ethic, same pace, poorer vision and less of a goal threat. Just not a ned like Nacho. You wasted £2m on a squad player. Still wouldn't be surprised if he scores against us, but he is not a player worth worrying about.
42

BEMUSED EXILE,

I have to smile wryly at the Celtic posters on here who are almost falling over themselves in the rush to inform us of just how poor Miller and Lafferty are. Miller, I believe, will do an excellent job for Rangers. He is brave, strong, fast, possesses great stamina, and has scored a three-figure number of goals at club level as well as being in double figures for our national team. He'll definitely be first-choice at Ibrox, I reckon that he'll hit 20-plus goals for Rangers in the league this season, just as he did for Wolves in 2002/03 and 2004/05 (coincidentally, two seasons that Rangers won the league in Scotland).

Reading Advocaat's comments about the "left-side", I'm convinced that he's actually confusing Riordan with McGeady. If he's about to get £15 million plus for Arshavin, he'd hardly expect a question about replacing him with a £500,000 reserve. So, if I'm right, wee Dick doesn't even rate McGeady highly enough to replace Arshavin, who, in fairness, is one helluva player.

I guess looking at the hard facts and evidence can be difficult for some but why such obvious spin?

Did you know that apart from the PLG period you need to go back to the early 80's to find a Rangers manager in Jock Wallace who has a lower win percentage.

So much for messiah Smith eh?
