Falkirk 0 - 1 Rangers: Smith sees promise in squad after victory

Walter Smith believes he finally saw glimpses of the spirit which saw Rangers compete on four fronts last season when they opened the new Clydesdale Bank Premier League campaign with a win at Falkirk today.
And the Ibrox boss has backed his players to put their midweek European exit at the hands of FBK Kaunas firmly behind them following what was a dismal week for the club both financially and in terms of reputation.

Andrius Velicka opened his account for his new club by claiming the decisive goal at the Falkirk Stadium and, now that the pressure has been eased slightly, Smith has backed Rangers to push on in their quest for domestic honours this season.

He said: "There was a bit more activity about us than there was in the two games against Kaunas.

"It won't take away from the disappointment of what happened last week and I hope that will be with us for quite a while. But we definitely showed a determination and it was more like last season.

"The biggest problem we have is that we have built up a reputation over the last 18 months and it got ruined in two games.

"Their attitude and determination to play was something we have not had to question over the 18 months I've been the manager.

"Obviously the two games we played over the last couple of weeks changed everyone's opinion so it was good they got that back again and I'm sure we will go on from here."

The events in Kaunas sent shockwaves throughout the continent, as last season's UEFA Cup finalists were sent crashing out of Europe before their SPL campaign had even begun.

The pressure was on to secure all three points at Falkirk and Smith admitted: "It was an important win for us.

"You always like to get off to a win at the start of any league season and, especially after the happenings of midweek, it was an important win for us.

"I would certainly hope it would give everyone a little bit of a lift in confidence.

"If we had played anything like we did today in either of the two games against Kaunas, we might not have been knocked out in the manner we were."

Falkirk probably deserved at least a share of the points but Allan McGregor's save from a Michael Higdon penalty when the game was still deadlocked proved to be a pivotal moment.

Smith said: "It was obviously an important save. There was a little bit of slackness on our own part in terms of defending.

"We handled most of today's circumstances quite well but we were slack at that stage.

"With the week that we've had it was one of those that you felt might have gone against us but it didn't and credit to Allan for making the save.

"We went on to get the winner after that and we were pleased about that. We managed to get the win and that was the most important thing for us."

Kevin Thomson limped out of the action with a thigh strain but is unlikely to face a spell on the sidelines, while Carlos Cuellar should be back for next week's visit of Hearts.

Asked what the difference was between the two sides today, Falkirk boss John Hughes replied: "Belief. It's Rangers you are playing against and, no matter how they are playing, there are always a danger.

"Two words I would say to my own team are 'belief' and 'conviction.' If they had showed a bit more of those, they would definitely have taken something from the game."

3 points away, clean sheet away. Couple of new players on the way, injured players returning soon. Things are looking a wee bit better this morning.

Naw mate. Played off the park by a team put together on a fraction of yer budget. Let off the hook by the penalty miss and scored fae a tap in. Maybe I'm being a wee bit harsh though, Rangers might well make the top six this year.

Hi lads.

Wondered how long it would take before a negative comment emerged. Not long is the answer.

Lafferty and Bougherra certainly appear decent, and it's nice to get off to a winning start, especially away from home. It was also a bonus to see the referee award a penalty against us. Should hold back the flood of Idee's "RUINS" posts for another day.

So, top of the SPL with only the 37-game run-in remaining. Bigger tests await however. The 4th, 3rd and 2nd biggest teams in Scotland are our next 3 opponents, so I would urge Walt to move on bringing in these 2 creative midfielders that he's hinted at.

C'mon the 'Gers.

Miller was injured, but nothing serious. His goalscoring run will just have to start next week. You feel a certain sense of inevitability that he will score in the OF derby, just as he did in his first one for Celtic when he was in the midst of a barren period.

Cuellar and Beasley nearly fit now, and young Smith just a couple of weeks away, plus whatever new signings WS can still bring in.

Hope springs eternal.

Not a great performance football wise, but a great effort from the players on the park.

With players to return from injury and suspensions along with the promised signing of some midfield help things could start to look better.

Lafferty I thought played well on the left side, the new centre half did hid job and Boyd was in the mix up front. No comment on the referee that's for the other mob.

3points away is a good start.

On the subject of the ref, Charlie Adam should have been sent off.

He was about three days late with a challenge on McBride and clattered into him. It was right under the ref's nose. He didn't even give the free kick. McBride was unable to contune and had to be subbed. An absolutely screaming in your face yellow card.

Then in the last minute, the ball went out for a shy to Falkirk, and the ball was lying trackside against the advertising board whereupon, in full view of the referee and linesman, Adam went over and booted the ball away. Again, an absolute stick on for a yellow card.

The ref must have felt that he'd already gone over his quota having already had no option but to book three other Rarrangerz players, but there's absolutely no doubt that he let Adam off the hook with two glaring yellows during the short period that Adam had on the park.

I did not see even the tiniest glimmer of creative spark from any Rangers player. The goal was a punt up the park which Boyd did well to knock on. Lafferty had an easy job to knock it along the six yard box and Velicka had an even easier job in tapping in.

It was Boyd's header that made the chance happen.
The most difficult part for Lafferty was in resisting the temptation to go for the shot....the pass was the better option, and far easier to execute, so you might say he showed good judgement.

that was a bit better, a wee tweak here n there and we should be ok, laffs is a bit clumsy and tommo cannot tackle, mcculloch lost in midfield but greegsy is back, broadfoot was excellent again, and papac is always solid...velicka and boyd will always get goals, if there are chances!Boughy strolled through it, nice to see a rangers player comfortable on the ball for a change.

It's perhaps worrying for rangers fan that the only player who showed any threat , and even then it wasn't a heck of a lot, in the final third was Boyd who is rumoured to be heading of to Cardiff in a swap deal for Loovens.

The black guy did have a good game (bougherra ?) and looks as though he'll be able to cope with most of the spl , although how he might fare against The Champions remains to be seen...I think Higdon is a big dumplin' so he wasn't exactly tested today. But he answered all the questions put to him and will be pleased with his debut.

Thanks for you're concern regarding the RFC squad, but I think with a couple of additions to midfield the return of injured and suspended players we will do okay in the challenge for the title this year.

Lets hope the tic finish 3rd in their CL group, go into the UEFA Cup go all the way to the semis before losing, and have 3 cancelled matches to make in May.

I for one would vote for a league extension for you as the league will hopefully be over and the Gers champions.

Its great what one away win to start the season can do to someone, and I have not even had a pint yet. lol

It was very entertaining to watch boyd fall on his 3rse when just about through 1 on 1 with the goalie.

As I recall, Scotland's Shame were tunelessly droning out the 'why don't you go home ( BTW, so rearrangerz can win the league ?) ditty when the ball broke through and with boyd racing [snigger] onto the ball, Scotland's Shame ditched the chanting and gave out noisy excitement only to see big boydie go 3rse over t1t.

33 THE CELTIC SUPPORTING CLONE

A post from the man who does not have the stones to post under his own user name.

I hope you're fellow Celtic supporters are proud of you.

As for taking early retirement and all the perks that come with it, ,had you held a steady job over the last 30 years or even 1 year, you too could have enjoyed the benefits that go with having been gainfully employed.

Real classy comment regarding my wife,, you are a disgrace not just to Celtic supporters but to mankind in general.

I for one will pray for you.
