Miller motivated by Smith's faith

Published Date: 10 July 2008
KENNY Miller has vowed to use his special relationship with the Rangers management team to help win over sceptical fans.
The former Celtic striker's signing has proved unpopular with a large section of Rangers supporters following his mixed success in previous spells at Ibrox and Parkhead.

But the 28-year-old believes he is reaching the peak of his career, and he is sure manager Walter Smith and assistant Ally McCoist can inspire him to new heights.

Miller scored seven goals in 12 appearances when the pair were in charge of Scotland, revelling in the lone striker role that Rangers used so often last season.

And Miller believes the faith Smith has shown by paying Derby £2million for his services can inspire him to hit new heights.

"They say that strikers hit their peak between 27 and 30 and I hope that will be the case for me," he said.

"I feel that the best place for me to hit my peak is here because of the management team.

"In the national team when Walter Smith came in I felt my game went to a different level.

"I got on really well with him, Ally McCoist and Tommy Burns and it rubbed off on the way I started to play.

"You always want to do well but I had that extra desire because of the faith and belief that was shown in me by these men.

"It seemed to take me to a higher platform and I am hoping to reach another level now that I am working with Walter and Ally again, along with Kenny McDowall and Ian Durrant."

Miller's spell at Celtic, which ended less than a year ago, has not endeared him to the Rangers support and some fans claim he is not good enough to lead the club's attack. But Miller has vowed to win over the doubters whatever their misgivings.

"I didn't have to think about coming back to Rangers," Miller told the Rangers News. "I immediately decided to go and then thought I would deal with the consequences after that.

"If I have people to win over then hopefully I will win them over with the way I play.

"Times have moved on and there are instances of players playing for both sides of a rivalry, but it is still an unusual situation to play for Rangers, play for Celtic and then come back to Rangers again.

"I suppose you are always going to get people against you for one reason or another.

"If they are football reasons then hopefully I can win them over because of what I do on the park and what I bring to the team.

"If there are any other reasons then hopefully these will disappear if I show I am performing every week."

Miller has joined fellow strikers Kyle Lafferty and Andrius Velicka in signing for Rangers this summer from Burnley and Viking Stavanger of Norway respectively, and Smith has now reportedly set his sights on a defender in the form of Watford player Danny Shittu.

Celtic and Sunderland have also been linked with interest in the former QPR centre-back.

#2 - when you say he did well, do you mean the huge amount of goals he scored or rather because he ran his backside off? No one can ever question his work rate but his main downfall is his very low scoring rate, a fundamental flaw in a striker, particularly when you consider the large fees Rangers have forked out on him over the years. He won't be a dud but he wont get you 20 goals a season either. I'd suggest that an OF striker needs to be scoring around the 20 mark to keep the fans happy.

#4 - you've hit the nail on the head. Miller will get to watch a proven goalscorer in Boyd during training while he, proven to be far from prolific, keeps him out of the first team. I'm of the old fashioned opinion that a striker should score goals rather than just running themselves into the ground. Not that I have a problem with his workrate but anyone of us could do that with enough training. Scoring goals on the other hand is what seperates a good forward from an average one.

I wish we would all stop making the same old partisan judgements on Kenny Miller. The guy is a model professional who did a smashing job for Celtic & will probably do the same for Rangers. He has good pace & never stops grafting. He is not a natural goal-scorer, but he pulls defenders all over the place. He was well regarded by the Celtic support, who could see that he gave 100% every time he played. He will do the same for his new side.
Celtic would have been happy to keep Kenny, but an offer of close to £3m. for a player that they signed on a Bosman was an offer they would have found it hard to refuse. They had told him that he was their FIFTH choice striker, so he was going to struggle for a place in the team. That's the way things happen in football.
I would be happy to see him back at Celtic Park & I wish him well in the future.

Fact - Walter Smith, one of Britain's finest managers, reckons Miller can do a job for Rangers. That'll do for me.

The cretinous faction at Ibrox claiming they know better than Walter can happily give up their season tickets & let more knowledgeable fans take their places. Then we'll see how they feel when Rangers win the league and Miller is one of the country's top scorers.

Miller plays very well in a 4-5-1, just look at Scotland. Wattanacio is showing his hand early. To play Boydchenko he has to go for 4-3-3 and take the gamble. Miller will be first pick.

Won't happen Glen. Rangers would fold if they only had 10,000 season book holders.

Hardly a day goes by without a "Kenny Miller" story. If it's not an ex-Rangers manager (Advocaat) telling us all that Kenny will be a "smash hit" at Rangers, or an ex-player saying how Miller will be a star next season, it is one newspaper after another (The Record, Evening Times, Scotsman) talking him up in advance of the new season.

Sounds to me like Mad Mr Murray has been calling in a few favours among the Laptop Loyal in his quest to win the disgruntled fans round to the idea of the ex-Celt wearing the Rangers colours.

Sad isn't it?

#19 - 3 points:

1) Celtic do have season cards too, but the general terminology is season tickets or books.

2) Glen is a Gers fan. Read his comment again.

3) If a joke fails or is ignored, don't push it with your audience by forcing them to revisit the joke. It's even worse the second time and makes you look amateurish and puerile.

My brothers and my father are all Celtic season book holders. It comes with a card. The last time I was in Scotland, I used one of them to go to the game and there's a scanner at each turnstile.

My budget didn't stretch that far mate :)

I was at the Ibrox Disaster game. It was my first Old Firm game with my mates and brothers, as opposed to with my dad.

My brothers took me into the Kelvin Hall for the Carnival after the game. We ditched our colours and spent a couple of hours there. While having a snack, someone said 5 people had died. Even that was a great shock to us.

We eventually got home about 9pm. My mother had been worried but my father reassured her in the knowledge that we were at the other end. Relatives had phoned from Canada to check if we were safe and again, my dad was able to reassure them.

When we were told the full extent of the disaster, we were dumbfounded and we watched the TV news reports in silence.

Great post #8. Kenny was well regarded by the majority of Celtic fans for his efforts. He is a great team player. It is not a surprise to hear positive stories about him now he's with Rangers and will bask in their more favorable press coverage. While at Celtic Park, he was frequently pillaried by Tom English of the Scotsman in particular. KM did not deserve that and I await Mr English's future articles on KM now. Would have preferred that he was still at Celtic but now he has returned to Ibrox, I hope he does score a bundle for Rangers and Scotland - but draw blanks in all Old Firm games. Good luck to him.

Looks like Shaun Maloney is on his way back to Celtic, with Lee Naylor going in the opposite direction to Villa Park. Shaun spent a day at Celtic Park last week as a guest of Gordon Strachan and apparently it is just a matter of the two clubs agreeing the cash difference, and they are not too far apart. Celtic are also very close to signing a replacement for Naylor and a striker. Looks like being a busy 10 days or so in the Celtic transfer front, despite the fact that a few Gers fans on here thinking the transfer window closed last week.

He told me Maloney spent the day at the Stadium last week - Wednesday or Thursday, I can't remember - and that his return is all but certain. He also reckons Tamas is on his way too. Well it is good to see on this forum that there are plenty of Celtic fans wishing KM well. I must admit when he signed for Celtic I was gutted. I have always liked the guy after seeing him score five past the Buddies eight years ago and frankly was a little frustrated when he was sold. I was even more perplexed when PLG in his infinite wisdom decided against getting him on a Bosman and instead hired a poor body double in Sheeeeeeebo. I think if we had signed KM then the development of the partnership between KM and Boyd could have been great.
Sadly not and Wee Gord had the hindsight to take him. Ok he doesn't score barrowloads but his industry makes up for that, basically a JCD that can play 90 mins.
Interesting to read on hear the few comments about the press and their supposed bias saying he was p1sh when he was at Porkheid but is now magic...jeez looks like your already on the paranoia pops this morning.

I think Miller is going to prove a few people wrong and hopefully make the embarassing David Edgar of RST think before he opens his gob again. He seems ultra motivated and bursting to do well for us - got a good feeling about him

As for Shittu - i seen him in the flesh last year for Watford and he's an absoleute monster - not as tall but twice as wide as even Balde.

Still need some creativity - Some are pinning hopes on Beasley but to my eyes he's too lightweight - good for penalties though (cue ususal dhims moaning about conspiracies etc - surely not after last year!)

I was an always present at Bloomfield road for a few years due to work commitments denying me the journey north to Paradise.

The bold Danny had apparently not long taken up football (seriously) when he 'graced' the Seasiders pitch.

Agricultural is an apt description of his talents. The lad who played beside him was Clark Carlisle and he WAS the real deal.
He went to QPR and had some alcohol issues which I believe he has conquered, unlike Danny who has footballing issues which he is still grappling with.

What will the reaction be to the bold Kenny if he has as slow a start to his scoring at Mordor as he did in Paradise?

£3 Million plus the sell-on add-on 500k has to be THE best bit of business for a 5th choice striker EVER.

Smith has not bought one single player that will allow him to change the 4-5-1 system.

As soon as they play with less than a 5 man midfield they leak goals to even the likes of QOS.

Smith will be mutually consented by Christmas if they flop in Europe and fail to defeat the Champions at fortress Paradise.

62 - correct, the 3m would have been the full amount had Kenny Misser not been mince and kept Derby in the EPL. It was 2.5m

The 500k is slightly inaccurate too. It was 25% of any re-sell Celtic would get.

AGain, due to his woeful inadequecies his market value dropped considerably and he was punted by Derby to the first bidder. This was ReaRangers 1.9m. Therefore, the figure Celtic get would be just below 500k.

Turns out that in Russian, Karenin is the male version of the name and Karenina is the female. The same is true for a lot of aristocratic family names in 19th century Russia. So I guess Lenin's wife would be Mrs Lenina.

The truth of the matter is that although Kenny Miller displays an excellent professional attitude and thus always gives 110% he is way below the standard required for a team who needs a centre forward with at least a 1 in 3 conversion ratio for chances created.

KM may be around 1 in 7 and Rangers fans know this and 'persuading' themselves that uncle Wally will somehow be able to improve on this when so many other clubs have failed to is delusional.

I really fear for the higly likable Kenny Miller because he will, as he so often has done in the past, miss gilt edged chances that will cost RFC vital points and then things might turn very ugly for him with the Edgars of this world cheerleading everybody on.

Rangers mate of mine conceded the only thing that bears really think he might contribute is the inevitable goal against the tic in a derby match that will facilitate a bit of gloating, but for doing the business over a season-no chance and WE all know that dont we?

15 minutes north of L'kenny in a wee village called Milford.

Son and daughter in Glasgow right now doing CFC summer footie course at Rouken Glen. Son telling me on phone last night the coaching is superb, even better than you da's i asked,.

The same coaches are heading to Japan next month for a 6 week tour coaching all over the country.

Isnt it great having a truly GLOBAL fan base that just doesnt constitute Troon and Ballymena.

Hail Hail

They were only about 10 or 15 minutes away from you when you were in Rathmullan.

RE. KM goals to senior matches ratio, I believe I read not so long ago that KM has played approx. 315 senior games scoring 94 times.

For Scotland 11 goals in 36 matches.

So we can expect KM to score approx. every 315 minutes going on his career average.

I can only hope!

I see the bookies have made Celtic favourites to win the spl and make it four in a row,and Celtic have only signed one player.I guess the bookies are not to impressed with Walters signings .

#104 - the bookies had rangers as unbackable favourites as well to win the spl at one point only months ago so what do bookies know.

#11 and others: go to rangers official site - the terminology used is 'season ticket'. So there!

Breaking news on the Evening Times tells us that he who cannot be booked under ANY circumstances.....Bawwy Ferguson.....Is out of action for the next 3-4 months due to an ankle injury.

Not like Wattie to knacker a players health, well being, and career when his is on the line......is it?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Rangers Football Club are an association football team based in Glasgow, Scotland, who currently play in the Scottish Premier League. They have won 51 league titles,[2] a world record, and have won more major trophies than any football club in the world.[3]

Hows that for an alternative history?

Its not his overall goal scoring record that im critical of. Its the poorness of his overall play, his lack off application and bar a few occasions his failure to do anything in big games. Now if he was a 1m pound player fair enough bu the guy is a 4m international.
If you are happy with a return of 2 CL goals and 1 against us thats up to you. Il put it in perspective. Adam has the same.
Surely THE worst player ever to pull on a Holland top.
If you sign Samaras as well you better hope wee McDonald doesnt get injured cos neither of them frighten me.

Keep reading WS looking to sign another centre half for us.

My question is why? We have Cuellar, Weir, Papac, Webster, and Daily and Leadfoot in an emergency.

With the injury to BF and the lack of midfield players being brought in, I would think the middle of the park would be our priority this off season.

If its true about the injury to Ferguson and him being out for 4 months do you not feel this could have a profound effect on RFC title aspirations?

#111 Thats not yer glasses steaming up, it's clouds ya muppit hahaha.

Bawwy will be out until Christmas.....at least, then your new manager McCoist will herald him as a new signing who will get the side back on track to fight for 3rd place and a UEFA spot.

I think that's bad news as Wattie might for once get spawny in the transfer market, i'd rather have ferguson in the side

if ferguson didnt have so much power..well he got rid of plg..walter would not have been frightened of him and would have sent him for his operation on may 25th..and that would be nearly 2 months of his recuperation done..
