No-one like Boyd, says Naismith

Published Date: 25 June 2008
IF THE procession of new strikers through the gates of Murray Park over the past few weeks has had any dispiriting effect on Steven Naismith, he hid it brilliantly yesterday as he welcomed the signings of Kenny Miller, Andrius Velicka and Kyle Lafferty as an exciting statement of attacking intent from Rangers manager Walter Smith.
As he continues his rehabilitation from the cruciate ligament injury to his left knee which cut short his debut season with the Ibrox club, Naismith insists the increased competition for forward places in the team can only enhance his incentive to re
turn to action as quickly and effectively as possible.

The 21-year-old is confident that will also be the mindset of his close friend and fellow former Kilmarnock player Kris Boyd, for whom Rangers have rejected an offer in the region of £3 million from Cardiff City.

For while Naismith admires the different qualities of the three new recruits to Smith's first team squad, he believes none of them can provide the guarantee of goals which Boyd – who has astonishingly netted 71 times in 76 starts for Rangers – brings to the table.

"I haven't spoken to Boydy about it yet," said Naismith, "but I don't think he is in any rush to make a decision to leave Rangers. He obviously didn't play as often as he would have liked last season, but I think he wants to stay and fight for his place.

"Personally, I was delighted to hear the club had turned down a bid for him because any team would want to keep a striker who scores goals like Kris does. When you see his name on the team sheet, you just know you are going to score and guys like that don't come cheap.

"I think all three of the new strikers the club have signed are excellent players and the competition for places is a good thing for all of us. I was here when Kyle arrived to sign last week and you are struck right away with how tall he is. It doesn't take a genius to work out he is going to win more than his fair share of headers. He is still a young player, already a full international and obviously has a lot of potential.

"Kenny has been there and done it at the highest level for club and country. He does a lot of running during games and really hassles defences. I would describe Velicka as more of an all-rounder. He is big, strong and has scored a lot of goals in big games in the SPL for Hearts.

"So I think all three can do well for Rangers with their different styles of play, but none of them are like Kris Boyd. I don't think there is another striker who has a record like he does in Scottish football. The manager here knows what he is doing and he has spoken before about the need to rotate strikers. But, who knows, maybe he might change the formation for the new season and have Boydy up there every week."

While Boyd and most of the rest of the Rangers first-team squad return for pre-season training tomorrow, Naismith has been at Murray Park for most of the close season as he recovers from a successful operation on the serious injury he sustained in the Scottish Cup semi-final against St Johnstone on 20 April.

Naismith's knee, weakened by a late tackle from Martin Hardie, crumpled when his studs caught in the uneven Hampden turf to end his involvement in a campaign which, at that stage, still saw Rangers chasing a quadruple of trophies. "It is one of those things that happen in football and I have just had to accept it and move on," he said.

"I watched it again on television and it was the tackle which did the damage. It meant there was no support for my knee when I caught my studs on the pitch.

"I've got no hard feelings about it. I was with Martin Hardie at Kilmarnock and he sent me a text afterwards to say he was sorry. He didn't need to do that, but I appreciated it and it showed he didn't mean it.

"So far, the recovery has gone as well as I could have hoped. The operation was far easier than I expected and I'm getting a lot of support from people at Rangers who have been through similar injuries, like Kevin Thomson and DaMarcus Beasley. The medical knowledge and surgical techniques for cruciate injuries has improved so much since Ian (Durrant] had his injury, so I'm fortunate it's not so serious nowadays.

"I haven't put any time scale on when I play again. The physios could give me a rough idea if I asked them, but I don't want to know. I just know it feels good at the moment."

Meanwhile, Naismith yesterday presented cheques totalling £75,000 on behalf of the Rangers Charity Foundation to their three nominated charities for the 2007-8 season, the British Red Cross, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Craighalbert Centre for children with motor impairments.

BEMUSED EXILE,

I thought for a moment that this headline was "No-one likes Boyd", which would have put a different slant on things.

I don't profess to know what Walter's intentions are with regard to our goal-machine, but I certainly don't think that the triple arrival of new strikers necessarily signals the end for him. After all, we've sold Sebo, will miss Naismith for most of next season at least, and would probably like to offload both Cousin and Darchville, so Boydie may very well be in the manager's plans.

Come off it, Wattie has played the same way for over two decades now. why on earth would he change the habit of a life time now?
Kris Boyd will be played in exactly the same way this year as he was last. He may score 30 goals but at least ten of those will be in the cup against lower league teams.

Exactly...Boyd's scoring record against the better teams is apailing.
That's why Walter benched him for the big games.
Boyd feeds of bad defending, something which you don't find much of at the senior level.

Clearly Watties cunning plan to play a "Reverse Wattenacio" formation of 1-4-5 next season has the green half of Glasgow (no offence, Partick fans) in a tizzy.

In order to address this, the shareholders of Celtic PLC have thanked Skippy for his excellent returns last year, but have insisted on a 35% increase in his plan for next season.

"Boyd only scores against diddy teams" - OK, you don't get six points for beating Celtic, but only three for beating the likes of St Mirren; therefore, if his goals against the diddy teams win games, they strengthen Rangers' likelihood of CL football.

Professional rugby has introduced the concept of "impact players" - a guy you sling on with 20 or 30 minutes left to take advantage of tiring opponents. Liverpool 20 years ago did this with "supersub" Chris Fairclough, but the idea never caught on. KB seems to me to be his modern equivalent. I somehow thing WS is too conservative/blinkered in his thinking to grasp this concept.

Mind you, as Euro 2008 has proved, winning football is all about attacking at a fast tempo; Rangers don't seem capable of playing at a fast tempo, because as soon as the ball reaches "the Crab" in the number six jersey, it has to be passed sideways or backwards, any way but forward.

Ferguson's inability to maintain attacking momentum is Rangers' biggest drawback.

If WS can sort this out,and learn to properly rotate his squad, Rangers can overtake Celtic next season. If not - four in a row anyone?

AJ Fife,

Hopefully Boyd will get a proper club and then Scotland will have a real player on it's hands.

Serie A or the Premiership would suit Boyd perfectly and bring him up to the level of a true top quality player. Stuck on the Rangers bench is only marginally worse than playing for the first team. To improve, he needs to find a club that will respect him and that will also provide a challenge.

Larsson was used as a sub at Barca for most of his 2 years there behind Samuel Eto, Ask Thierry Henry what difference Larsson made when he came on in the Champions League final against Arsenal. Why was Sir Alex and the rest of the ManU squad begging Henrik to extend his stay, maybe because he is World Class. This is a striker who has scored goals at club level in all competitions including Europe, at International level at World Cups and European Championships. Yet you compare him to Boyd , who I think could be a decent player, but who cannot get a game in a rangers team that was devoid of any attacking ability last year.

Maybe that says it all about Wattie.

For the record Larsson was one of if not THE most effective players i have seen in Scotland.

Perhaps not blessed with the natural talent of Laudrup or Gasgoingne but his mentality plus him profesionalism IMO made him a cut above.

When's Murray going to give you Rangers fans the latest on your new £750m super stadium, hotel & office complex and redevelopment of Govan? How many times has he made out he is going to redevlop Govan? And what progress has actually been made in the 20 years he's been there.
He said he hoped to reveal all in May and we're now end of June and not a tweet from him.
You know it's rubbish when we've heard nothing from the council or developer. And the papers are too lazy or sycophantic to actually check the facts. They just print his baloney. How many more lies and ego propaganda can you guys stand? Shame on the papers who print his childish drivel.

Survivor Of Riots,

25/06/2008 10:24:14
It was announced today that the ReaRangers Silly Teets (RST) were to be given a place on the board of ReaRangers Fitba Club.

David Fruit-Loop Jamjar, Mark Mingwall and Stevie (that was a penalty ref) Smith all gathered together to discuss their strategy of the way forward for the backward institution and who would actually get a place on the board. A meeting was scheduled with Minty Moonbeams to discuss the post.

The RST canvassed feedback from their members via a question and answers session in advance of the meeting, the below is a sample of the questions asked and answers given:

Question from Campbell Finlay-Farquharson of the non Norn Iron and Associated ReaRangers Supporters Club:
“Do the Teets accept that the Sellick win the league cos the SPL is minging?”
Answer from the RST
“aye”

Question from Finlay Farquhar-Campbell of the Associated non Norn Iron Supporters Club:
“Do the Teets accept that ReaRangers are the bestest club in the world?”
Answer from the RST
“aye”

Question from Farquhar Campbell-Finlayson of the Non Norn Iron but maybe associated if the price is right supporters club:
“Do the Teets accept that Minty Moonbeams is handsome”
Answer from the RST
“aye….very”
Fruitloop-Jamjar - "ah pure fancy him an aw"

Question from the Riot Survivor:
“Do the Teets accept that you lot are disgusting, bigoted and a blight on the landscape of Scotland and that you have been vanquished by the Mighty Celtic? Also, do you agree that you are staring down the barrel of 4 in a row??”
Answer from the RST
“Lets wreck this feckin joint. Theres a riot to be had!! Lets get with it!!”

ReaRangers Chief Executive Bainochio issued a statement that the riots instigated by the RST had “he-haw” to do with ReaRangers and that the RST organisation had nothing to do with ReaRangers Fitba Club.

Nothing beats, on a dreich Wednesday morning, reading the rival posts from the fans of the Chuckle Brothers on such earth-shattering subjects of Boyd v Larsson.

A point chaps - in the last 25 years only one genuinely world-class talent has emerged from Scottish football, and that's Gordon Ramsey.

Kris Boyd has a Ferrari and a MB 4x4, he is handsomely-paid for coming off the bench and usually scoring. He has no incentive to improve those areas of his game where he is less than top-quality: first touch, work-rate, tracking back.

He could jog along as he has been doing for another eight or ten years, scoring his 20 goals per season and becoming a Rangers Legend, picking up a handsome salary along the way, with a million-pound testimonial at the end.

OR he could reconfigure his physique, come back in the afternoons and work on his deficiencies, score goals in Europe and earn the transfer which will make him even more money in a genuinely big league.

Has he that ambition? Are there people in the Rangers' management able to motivate him towards these goals and to give him the coaching he needs?

He might not be earning in the Ballack/Ronaldo/Gerrard league, but, by Scottish standards he's remarkably well-paid.

He has a very rare skill - he scores goals easily and with that skill he should be shooting for glory and lasting legend.

Does he want to try for that glory and legend, or is he, as I suspect, happy to be a big fish and a very shallow pool?

To be the best calls for an awful lot of hard work and dedication - sadly, nothing I have seen from KB convinces me he has that dedication.

100 The one thing I will give you about Boyd is that he can score goals, albeit only in the SPL at present. He has never played at World cup or European Championship level and probably never will (not his fault). But he is slow, over weight and lazy and needs both a change of attitude and probably a change of club to deliver on the talent that he has. Wattie does not like him for whatever reason and will play him only as a bit part next year

Nervous Bear...A word to the (not so)wise...this cyber version of pi$$ing in the wind does you no favours. How can you expect to be taken seriously when you trot out such grandiose, ill informed rubbish?
You could,of course, just be at the madam.I'll,for good form's sake, give you the benefit of the doubt and plump for the latter...

Great to see your head buried well in the past (circa 1690). You should have that posted on your gravestone.

Now, stand up for the Champions and finest team in Scotland!

Nota Bene for NB..When Boyd has scored 243 goals in all competitions,Scored 2 goals in a UEFA cup final, sets up 2 goals in a Champions League final, has played, with distinction with Man Utd and Barcelona come back and we'll talk...Still,it IS good to have a wee bit of daft verbal jousting at this time of day..;@)

ALexander (free tx from Cardiff)
Broadfoot (worst pro ever seen)
Poopach (remnant of the glory days under PLG)
Dailly (purest mince)
Big Weiry (203 year old)
Ferguson (Captain of the ReaRangers who've lost 6 out the last 8 championships)
Hemdani (master of the square baw)
Davis (cannae get a game for one of the worst EPL teams - but the 4m will come in handy for them)
Whittaker (couldnae get near Naka so kicked him)
Novo (heidless chicken)
Cousin (I can play fitba - get me out of here)

Say their names with pride.

oh but wait, you've added Kenny Misser and Kylie Laugherty to that team....oh naw....I'm away again.

My aching sides!!!

Boyd- an overweight moustachioed lazy six yard box player. His link up play is non existant, how many champions league goals has he scored? How may against any decent opposition?

Larsson was in the twilight of his career and still managed to secure a move to one of the biggest clubs in Europe. He turned the Champions league final round after coming on as a sub.

134 Wrong again "Those Lads" turned up in Manchester, but to describe what they contributed as "playing" is stretching the imagination.

"Those lads" are still behind the current Celtic squad and barring some miracle will be again at the end of the forthcoming season.

No fan of the Mighty Celtic was remotely surprised by the performance of Russia's Champions and current mid table team, Zenit St Petersburgh, throughout the Uefa cup.

Indeed having seen the performance of the previous Russian Champions, The Pavlyuchenko inspired Spartak Moscow, in the early stages of the Champions League this season, the current "oh lets look at Russian football" trend currently underway (predominantly undertaken by English Media as the Russian National team pumped them out of the Euro Championship - further eveidence of the strength of that countries football) was already a topic for discussion by Celtic Supporters who are renouned for their football knowledge.

Indeed having defeated the Champions of Russia (Spartak), the Champions of Europe (AC as they were at the time) this season, just after a season were the lauded EPL champions (Man UTD) were put to the sword, Scotland should stand up an be proud that they have such a fantastic team.

In the UEFA cup run, ReaRangers recorded 2 actual victories (as opposed to away goals and penalties) against Werder Bremen and Sporting Lisbon.

Context is everything!

Reading through the posts the usual culprits emerge with their lies.

Marco Negri was sold because he celebrated by blessing himself?
Please, this was at the time when amato, coming on as sub at Ibrox blessed himself and got a round of applause from the home fans, while our sellick mindit rivals jeered that he was a traitor!
The truth in the negri situation was that he got involved in an incident with Porrini, apparently an accidental injury which he percieved was malicious, he tried to have a go, bad move by negri, wanted an apology, was told to behave then HE refused to plya, contract was terminated after 6 or 7 months of his shenanigans.
Still dont let truth get in the way of a good lie!

yes, context is everything, winning is still winning sint it?
or would you rather the rules of football changed so as to only allow sellick to have the away goals rule work in their favour?

Having just read the article I´m surprised that Naismith didn´t include the proviso to keep Davis. Only my opinion but Davis was more instrumental than bit part player Kris Boyd in Rangers almost unprecedented quadruple explosion. I reckon that Naismith is obviously trying to keep his good mate at Ibrox and this helps turn the Rangers fans attention to not losing Boyd rather than keeping Davis. I think that 4m for an international player who helped take a Scottish team to the UEFA cup final is more than a fair price. A price that Fulham have already paid. I also imagine that one or two would also be willing to pay the same price that Fulham paid for him 1-2? years ago. According to the laptop loyal there is only a difference of 1m in their subsequent evaluation.

Considering that Lafferty´s price took a last minute hike due to Gow not wanting to go to Burnley and Rangers easily finding the money that it would indicate;

that the money well has dried up !!! Which isn´t what everybody is saying with a circa 30m profit this season.

that Watty does not rate Davis at 4m, yet Lafferty is worth 3.5m

That Rangers have taken the huff surely not !! LOL do not want to do business with Fulham after them seeing what a bad attitude and mindless moron that Daniel Cousin really is.

The financial figures released show that Rangers really need to qualify for the CL which starts in 4 weeks and has historically proven to be a difficult tournament for Rangers to qualify. It therefore begs the question why break up a team that almost won an unprecedented quadruple and got to the Uefa cup final just before such an important round of games.

Finally congratulations to all who donated for the final charity sum of 75,000.

152 - of course we can still crow about seville. and i agree with some of the raging rangers sufferers that there is a lot of celtic fans who never made the trip claiming to be there. if everyone who says they where in seville was actually there, the crowd would be in millions.

The Manchester counter seems to be going in reverse of that. When you strip out the people Bainnochio is disowning and the people caught on camera now stating "me, I was never in Manchester, I was er...washing my hair", the figure has gone from 200k down to about 5...and they've set up a support group to help them deal with the experience
