Norwich bid to lure Gow down south

ALAN Gow could be set for a move to the Coca-Cola Championship after all as he prepares to hold talks with Norwich City.
The Rangers forward, 25, travelled south to meet with Canaries manager Glenn Roeder yesterday, after rejecting a move to Burnley last week. He had been offered as a makeweight in the deal which brought Kyle Lafferty to Ibrox but failed to agree terms with the Lancashire club.

Gow endured a disappointing debut season at Rangers, making just two cup appearances after sealing a dream switch from Falkirk last summer.

He now looks set to bring his ill-fated spell with the Glasgow club to an end and relaunch his career at Carrow Road.

His agent Phil McTaggart said: "We are going south to Norwich to have a look at the club.

"Alan will have a look at what is on offer and speak with the management and then make a decision from there."

Meanwhile, veteran Rangers defender David Weir is expected to sign a new one-year deal with Rangers within the next 24 hours, his representative Dave Lockwood has confirmed.

Norwich is a much nicer city than Burnley and the Canaries fans will make him feel welcome. Gowser should go for it.

Meat an' tata pies in Burnley or Delia Smith's cooking in Norwich; it's a no-brainer really.

I think he's a better long term bet than Charlie Adam - sad loss.

They've a good set-up at Sparrow Road and the training ground at Colney is one of the best in the country but the locals are all asking this Jock in exile "who is this Gow guy?" "Never heard of him, is he any good?" "He cost HOW MUCH?!"

Good luck to him. He'll find the atmosphere at the ground a bit different from Ibrox! "On the ball City...."

Ever since the days of Bill Struth, who remember became manager in 1920, Rangers have syphoned off the cream of Scotland's provincial clubs - the likes of Bob McPhail and Tiger Shaw from Airdrie in the twenties and thirties, through Bobby Brown,Ian McColl and Sammy Cox from Queen's Park in the forties. In the fifties and sixties Sammy Baird, Harold Davis, Jimmy Millar, Ian McMillan etc were recruited; a decade and more later, Baxter, George McLean, Andy Penman, Dave and Alex Smith, Alex MacDonald, Tommy McLean, Tam Forsyth etc were picked up from the provincial clubs.

Then came McCoist, Cooper and so forth, right up to the present day.

Mostly they did well, added full Scotland caps to the League, Under-23 and Under-21 or even full caps they had won. Then came Souness and being Scottish wasn't enough, Rangers' new boys had to be anything but Scottish and suddenly, instead of occasional failures such Junior McGillvaray (Under-23 full back signed from Third Lanark and never played in the first team) we found out even above average Scottish players couldn't cut the mustard in the Old Firm's European hot house.

You could say Gow comes into that category, following the likes of Paul Ritchie and Allan Johnston in recent years.

You could also say Rangers' coaching staff cannot coach - in the terms of a coach being someone who helps a sportsman improve.

You might also say, such are the wages paid to even average players at Rangers that there is no incentive on the players to improve themselves - they can enjoy the fame and off-field perks of being a Rangers' player without the need to work too hard to become great rather than average players.

I'd far rather see Rangers (and Celtic for that matter who have also recruited from the provinces to eliminate shortfalls in a development programme which has long been superior to Rangers') having a proper development programme, augmented by an ability within their coaching staff to make good players better.

I do

Sorry ran out of space there.

As I was saying, I do not subscribe to the: "The Lisbon Lions/Barcelona Bears will never happen again" school of thought

The Old Firm could win in Europe, with all-Scottish squads, but only IF the Caledonian work ethic could be reinstalled in their players, and more importantly their players.

Is the will there?

Rant over - discuss.

Yes, ridiculous lack of talent coming through Ibrox isnt there? Fleck, wanted by arsenal & Liverpool for his pro contract, Ferguson, Adam, Burke, Mc Gregor, Smith, furman, shinnie, kinsborough. Add to that those who have made an impact elsewhere such as Robson, Miller, McSwegan, Brown, Pressley etc, etc, etc
Yes really the Youth system has not in any way repaid the balance to scottish football!

Thanks for saving me the trouble of responding to #13/14.

Watching young Fleck & co destroy Celtic at Hampden in the youth final I couldnt help wonder...where is it all going wrong at Murray Park?

I know its tough for you to state the facts, but Gow was on 8k a week. And his new club will pick up that tab, and hopefully Gow gets a raise.

Burnley website, said Lafferty cost 3mil, plus 250k in add ons depending on appearances, the clubs largest transfer fee ever.

£8k a week? I'd be surprised if Norwich would match let alone raise that figure. If someone like Darren Huckerby who was the Messiah was only on £12k a week and their former goalie, Robert Green, on £10k I can't see them paying a bit-part player like Gow more than the £5k #9 mentioned.

Met the players dad last year, he is a mate of the brother in law. only repeating what I was told.

Whether the Gers will make up some of the weekly wage I don't know.

Gow will be a handy signing, never given a shot at Ibrox, don't know why.

Yes according to the Burnley club website Lafferty cost 3mil plus 250k. did you not realise RFC were the purchasing club, or was that to difficult to figure out.

You have posted about the deal nearly every day since it was done.

That surprises me since you have the knowledge of the financial goings on at Ibrox. As I say go to Burnleys website for verification on the deal.

I am afraid we cannot all be as astute as you when it comes to having facts. I suppose now the writer of the article in BFC website is also not telling the truth in his/her story.

#15 and #16: I think you misunderstood my point. The players you mentioned joined Rangers from school - they came through the system from days as kids and if I might say, only Ferguson and McGregor are "first picks"; Smith will be if he can regain his pre-injury form, but Adam and Burke are squad players, while the likes of Robson, Mark Brown, Pressley and the rest were never more than squad players.

I was pointing out how nowadays, if Rangers do buy a player from a Scottish provincial club (Gow and Broadfoot for instance), they don't seem to "train on" to turn the potential which Rangers bought into their becoming "first picks".

Broadfoot looked a super prospect, playing on the left of a St Mirren back three - on the right of a Rangers back four he never looked as comfortable or as competent.

Gow looked like a diamond in the rough with Airdrie and Falkirk, I don't think he got a fair crack of the whip at Ibrox.

Even the best youth development programmes, and Rangers' has improved since Murray Park opened, has to occasionally be augmented by bought-in talent. It would surely be better for Rangers to buy Scottish, but only if the club and the bought-in player can put in the work to make the new signing genuinely a quality player.

That's not happening enough in my view.

BEMUSED EXILE,

"Gowser has made "Walter" think again here and has cost him,or rather his attitude,in the region of £1 million smackers."

Really? Owen Coyle's actual quote was that the deal was "closer to £4 million" when Gow was included.

"Closer" probably meant around £3.75 million. The cash part of the deal was £3.25 million (£3 million up front with a £250,000 add-on later)

Which puts Gow's value at about £500,000.
Doesn't it.
