THE REAL FOOD CAFÉ, Main St, Tyndrum, 01838 400235
Critical voices last week but Mary Robinson joins the chorus of earlier praise: “This place is absolutely excellent. We stop whenever we are passing. Their fish and chips are so good that we never have anything else. Additionally their coffee is grea
t, their fresh orange juice is perfect and their ice-creams are superb. Not surprisingly it can be crowded at peak times.”

PITTENWEEM FISH & CHIP BAR, 5 High St, Pittenweem, 01333 311258 Holds on at No.2 – but the Anstruther Fish Bar is coming back (see No.4). Brian from Dunfermline is sure the best fish and chips in Fife are in Pittenweem, not Anstruther.

L’AQUILA BIANCA, 17 Raeburn Place, Edinburgh, 0131-332 8433 www.laquilabianca.com Ian from Inverleith praised the “excellent fish with batter just the right degree of crispness”. Peter and Euan back him: “Top-class food, friendly service.”

ANSTRUTHER FISH BAR, Shore Street, Anstruther, Fife, 01333 310518 It’s back. Maureen Murphy was one who answered the call for its fans to step forward: “Huge variety of fish and the best chips ever – they’re practically fatless. For non-fried food eaters, fish will be grilled on request. Fresh fish grilled with a little melted butter – bet The Ritz couldn’t do it better.” Any more?

THE TAILEND, 14-15 Albert Place, Leith, Edinburgh, 0131-555 3577 Criticism last week is surpassed by Nan Chapman: “Four of us went soon after it opened. Food was absolutely superb – crisp, dry, light batter on the fish and dry, crisp chips. We returned three times but are unlikely to again. Each occasion was worse than the previous visit; batter was ‘oily’ and the oil flavour was that of well-used oil. Chips were oily and limp. It is such a pity they could not have maintained a degree of consistency.”

The best fish and chips ever comes from the Fish & Chip Van at Fisherman’s Pier, Tobermory.
