I HAVE often been past Old Penang on the bus and thought 'That looks like a gorgeous little Malaysian restaurant, I must pop in.' Today, it is recommended as one of the best places to eat Malaysian food in Scotland as part of Lisa Anderson's features on the south-east Asian country which has a showcase in Holyrood Park from 16-22 August – and I shall go soon.
If you have ever tried out any of the places to eat recommended in this supplement, it would be great if you could let me know. Just e-mail the usual readersrecommend@scotsman.com or write to me. Even if you have had a bad experience, I like to know. As I have often said, some places get better and others get worse, so if things don't live up to your expectations, spill the beans in full gory detail.
Anyway, I hope that the Malaysian recommendations today are of interest – and that the horsey recommendations linked to the Blair Castle Horse Trials are useful, too. We haven't really touched on equestrian suggestions in well over a year in Recommends, so it's long overdue.
Sorry for those of you fed up of the Outer Hebrides for going back there again, but I felt that Fiona Bell's suggestions deserved a good show – and I will certainly be taking note of her ideas next time I go back. Many thanks also to Alan Nairn, a regular recommender who returns to the Isle of Cumbrae for some outdoor activities – and of course to Paul MacMichael, who is nearing the end of his epic tour around Scotland's golf courses. I am not a big golf fan, but I have still found Paul's recommendations fascinating – so more power to his perfectly-positioned golfer's elbow.
Finally, Christine Wilson of Edinburgh is the winner of the Martin Wishart Cook Book offered last week. Congrats.
