SHOULD national service be brought back? I believe so though, curiously, I opposed the idea when I was younger.

Why should the armed forces be blessed with the scum of society.
Couldnt do it anyway.
No men to do it.
No depots to do it.
Cant find men for Iraq and Afghan.
Build bigger jails and shove them in

I fully agree with the idea of National Service.

I just returned from Germany last year where everyone does 2 years of national service and i can say that there is no ned problem.

People need to get away from the old fashioned idea of 'national service = army'.

Modern National Service can involve various options, Fire Brigade, Police, and community work of verious descriptions.

The bottom line is that it is compulsory for all those 16 to 18 year olds not in full time education.

In Germany kids *actually look forward to their national service*. The guy I talked to was looking forward to helping out with the local Fire Service and he may even consider becoming a fireman in the future.

As the article says, National Service encourages a sense of community spirit and civitas and this will have a knock-on effect for the rest of their lives. They will then go on and raise their own kids with better values and so it goes on. National service will end the ned problem within one generation.

When are the politicians in this country going to take Germany's lead on this?
