THE leader of the Catholic Church in Scotland has called for a "moral spokesperson" for the general public to be appointed.
Cardinal Keith O'Brien said he believed that in debates on ethical issues, such as embryo research and the family, somebody should represent the views of wider society.

He made the comments during a meeting with Scottish Labour leader Iain Gray
as part of a profile on him for BBC Alba.

Cardinal O'Brien also said he wanted a "more moral society".

He said: "Basic morality must continue to be taught and handed on to our people in whatever way possible – by our politicians, by our church leaders, by anybody in positions of authority – to say we want a more moral society, we want family life as we used to have family life with one man, one woman and children, not the sort of situations which are legal at this present time."

However, Glasgow University ethics expert Professor Sheila McLean doubted the feasibility of a "moral spokesperson".

"I don't think people can or should speak for other people's morality and there are plenty of people with opinions, including the cardinal, so I don't know where you would find somebody to speak for a moral majority," she said.

Prof McLean said that some countries had created bio-ethic committees to debate issues and publish their results, and that Unesco – the United Nations body which campaigns for good international relations through the sharing of information – had encouraged such bodies, but doubted the value of their research.

She added: "I think if we need anything, we need a better educated public on the issues so they can decide for themselves what they think.

"But it isn't necessarily the case just because the majority think one thing, that makes them right."

A spokesman for Mr Gray, said of the meeting with the cardinal: "The Labour leader did meet with Cardinal O'Brien and had a private conversation, during which they discussed embryology research, which he disagrees with the cardinal, in that he supports it.

"However, he understands fully why Cardinal O'Brien believes in discussing moral issues in public life and fully supports his right to do so."

During the programme, which is due to be broadcast on 13 April, the cardinal also reveals that he was initially rejected from entering the priesthood on two occasions because he was found to suffer from a heart murmur.

His predecessor Cardinal Gordon Gray advised him to go to university first, stating that if he could survive that experience, then it would be likely he could survive the seminary.

In March last year, Cardinal O'Brien was fitted with a pacemaker for the condition after suffering dizzy spells prior to a Palm Sunday service.

The day we need the head of the Roman Catholic church, with its track record on a variety of issues, to be some sort of moral spokesperson, is the day I emigrate from the planet.

This is from the organisation that teaches that condoms are a cause of aids and excomunicates incestuous rape victims for having abortions, nevermind its persecution of gays.

Is Sheila McLean the only 'ethics' spokesperson they can find, she's a known lefty, and yet the PC crowd use her to justify hiding information ie new HIV breakdown.

I would endorse Mr Souter for that role.

One of these days this rag might get around to publishing an article regarding the views of The Church of Scotland.

Any visitor from space reading the paper would get the feeling that Scotland was a Catholic country.

"Basic morality" based on whose definition Cardie?....

6...the 9 year old child who was raped and impregnated by her stepfather was not excommunicated...her mother and the doctors who performed the operation were..can you believe it?...The most likely outcome was that this 9 year old and her twins...yes ...TWINS..would have died...caesarian or no caesarian as her immature body could not have coped (according to the professionals)...yet the Catholic church wanted her mother to stand back and watch as her raped daughter grew towards her potential death without taking action? It beggars belief and as for your "Moral spokesperson".....pleeeeeaaaaase!.......jobs for the boys you mean....

Yet another stab at gay and lesbian relationships...."The sanctity of life?"...these people have twisted the meaning of "The sanctity of life" to suit their own agenda...their "Sanctity of life" allows little raped girls to die....I call that twisted and sick..

There is nothing moral about religions, arsk our ‘enery.
Morality is about invading a foreign country killing all the adult males, raping the women and indoctrinating the youth with your beliefs as a subservient race, changing their alphabets and language and banning their ideas and philosophies.
They gave resources to the people that please, and executed the insubordinate as heretics.
I could name a number of staunch countries, who were morally and intellectually superior previously –if their eyes were opened, there would be bitterness and gnashing of teeth.
Time to make a movie.

While I can agree that The Cardinal and his crew are perhaps not the best people for the job, Professor Sheila McLean has hit the nail on the head:

"we need a better educated public on the issues so they can decide for themselves what they think."

Too many of our "society" feel it is their RIGHT to get p1shed, shout, vomit, abuse, cause damage, offend, steal and otherwise disrupt the community, a community who equally have no right to peace and quiet.

My point - our society is descending to the lowest common denominator. Our morality is being eroded by the belief we have the right to what we want (good or bad). Nobody has the right to anything, HOWEVER we ALL have a responsibility to keep our society together and in the best state for the majority, and that involves education and debate.

9....I think you know the answer to that already...whats your views on the pregnant 9 year old raped child?

13...Sensible post...and there is too much fear in society now...people turn a blind eye when these things occur...

The director of the hospital where the 80-pound child who was 15-weeks pregnant had the procedure done said, “She is very small. Her uterus doesn’t have the ability to hold one, let alone two children.”

You are having a laugh mate...a 9 year old child with an immature body..and you want to take the chance with her life..that, says it all and I know where you are coming from...shame on you...a 9 year old little girl should not be forced to carry the result of a rape..forced to watch and endure her body swelling most likely beyond its capabilities...she had already endured the multiple rapes of her stepfather and should suffer even further?..emotionally..you think she was ready to deal with that..her mother and the doctors deserve to be lauded for their actions...their humane actions...any parent who would stand by and let their raped child give birth to the result of their rape needs their head examined....

No one is scoring points here...I am giving you an example why the Catholic church should not be the moral mouthpiece for anyone outside of its own chapel walls...

Ex-communicated....cannot take the sacraments...ie the wafer etc...Holy communion..last rites blahde blah

I do not believe Cardinal O'brien wants a moral society. I believe he wants a society that is subservient to the RCC and supportive of the RCC's views on abortion, embryo research and homosexuality. Embryo research is not where science will end, science unlike religion will ask many more questions and reveal many more truths about the universe. Science will without doubt deliver a time in which human clones and cyborgs will walk alongside the old- fashioned natural human beings. The RCC by this point will be a thing of the past, the Vatican will have been cleared out and its documents revealed to the world. People will be different, life will be alien to what we are used to now and religion and its tendency to corrupt those who perpetuate its myth will be confined to the history books. People will read about how some human beings used to travel to buildings and worship a deity they never ever saw. They will shake their heads in disbelief that some people prayed and offered thanks by fasting.
Perhaps the Cardinal should pursue his own interests and leave others to theirs. He cannot assist humanity,in fact as a member of the RCC he should be banned from any form of guidance.

James

There will be tragic stories surrounding abortion for many years to come, it is emotive topic. However, I do believe that if the law permits abortion and it is carried out within the time frame considered acceptable by medical practioners, it should be left to each individual to determine whether they wish to terminate or proceed. And their decision, a decision that takes place within the parameters of the law it should be a decision that goes unchallenged by all, let alone anyone from an organisation whose history reveals a dark and murky past.

23....A 9 year old child is unable to decide for herself what is best for her..her mother, on medical advice decided for her..I applaud the woman..Abortion is illegal in Brazil UNLESS someone is raped or their life is in danger...both of these situations applied here...regardless of what James says...

21...Typical emotive blackmail...these were not "Children" but foetus...and that the girls life was in danger was confirmed by the director of the hospital (Fatima Maia) where the abortion was carried out...she stated that the girl "Was very small" and that "her uterus would probably not have been able to carry one foetus never mind two"...

Of course this is tragic but I have no shame for my beliefs...and any decent mother or father should absolutely feel the same for their child....9 years old...sickening...if I were the mother my priority would be for my living child...being allowed to continue her childhood without going through a pregnancy that would traumatise her both emotionally and physically..

I am not concerned with the rapist and hope that the doctors and the mother find their way in life without the need for these maniacs who have the breathtaking audacity to postulate on the "Sanctity of life"

What of the life of the innocent born child?

The Cardinal needs to get hold of a good dictionary and check out just what it means to have a conscience. Most Christians will think about moral & ethical issues and make informed choices about what is right and wrong. I don't need anyone to speak on my behalf. The Catholic hierarchy may want to marginalise and disempower women, but some of us have had a theological education and are quite capable of speaking up for ourselves.
