GEORGE BUSH, the US president, welcomed Pope Benedict to the United States last night, as the pontiff confronted the sex-abuse scandal that has rocked the Catholic Church by declaring himself "deeply ashamed" even before he landed.
Flying from Rome for his first papal visit to the US, Pope Benedict vowed to "absolutely exclude paedophiles from the sacred ministry".

The scandal of priests sexually abusing children erupted in 2002 and has forced US dioceses to pay more tha
n $2 billion (£1 million) in damages. Five have gone bankrupt.

The Pope's six-day visit includes an address to the United Nations, masses in baseball stadiums and meetings with Catholic leaders and those of other religions.

Onlookers who gathered for his arrival at Andrews air force base outside Washington DC sang "happy birthday" for the Pope, who turns 81 today.

A White House spokeswoman said that Mr Bush and the Pope would probably discuss "human rights and the importance of fighting extremism and promoting religious tolerance" at a meeting today.

Pope Benedict, who marks the third anniversary of his election during the trip, has said he hopes the visit will lead to a spiritual renewal in the US.

His UN address on Friday will aim to highlight the need for greater peace and justice around the world.

Ever wonder why the sex offense is 99% with young boys rather than young girls?

It's because in the US several decades ago they had a hard time recruiting priests and they lowered the standards and allowed men who admitted to being gay as long as they swore not to practice being gay.

SO what...... dude..

Our WAR mongering evil Pres Bush has destroyed more lives in 7 years than those Priests did in 100 or 500 years.

Like 4000 dead US troops. like 30,000 maimed US troops add in their families ad their grief.

And no one knows, how many Iraqi's killed or maimed because of BUSH.

Oh I forgot, our US military don't count the IRAQI's . We just want their oil.

If anyone should apologize to the world its our evil Pres Bush.

Nice !!!!!!

So GC, it's a case of the Pope offering to stop his bachelor priests buggering altar boys as long as the President of the USA withdraws forces from Iraq?

Ever hear the expression 'two wrongs don't make a right?'

Did you see him getting off the plane in America?
Hahaha! Like a clown, dressed in shiny robes and staff in hand with some bling around his neck and a silly wee hat. He looked like the grand master of the KKK. Mind you, his organisation isnt that far removed from the KKK..Both have their hands stained with the blood of hundreds. Well millions in the case of the church!

Sex scandals he says; no mention of the inqusition, or how Galileo was correct and his predecessors wrong! Hmm, oh thats right, his predecessors like him are infallible, they are gods right hand men on earth, they have a direct line to heaven.

No mention of poverty either, just sex. Mind you, when you arrive in your own multi million dollar jumbo jet from a city that is one of the wealthiest on the planet on the back of rape, murder and war, you dont care much for the poor.
Bush shaking hands with the pope! Scarier than Hitler shaking hands with Pius was it? Cant remember!

Funny, if i'd said that the Catholic church's handling of paedophile priests was shameful, there would have been one or two regular posters here calling me 'sectarian'. Now the Pope himself has said, i guess it's ok to criticise child-abusing priests.

What a circus.

How thrilling it must be. The Pope (a former Hitler Youth) meets President Bush, the grandson of a Nazi sympathiser. They should get Arnold (the son of an SS officer) over, then the party can really begin!

Over the past week or so, the media here in the United States has been happily anticipating the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI but, once the pope landed at Andrews Air Force Base, the very same media have begin to tear him to shreds. This should not be surprising to anyone who knows anything about American journalists and their thinly veiled contempt for all things Catholic. On board the airplane from Rome to Washington, Pope Benedict XVI spoke about this horrific priest scandal to the point of saying he is “ashamed” of what has happened. This is not news! Before he was elected pope, then-Cardinal Ratzinger expressed anguish to his fellow clergy over this issue. “We priests, we priests…” he would say, unable to speak further.

Like his predecessor Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI has a heroic view of the priesthood. A Catholic priest is called by God to act in persona Christi, as Christ’s minister, to preach the Word, encourage the faithful, to consecrate the Eucharist at the altar and to share the Real Presence of Christ’s Body and Blood to Catholics who are free of mortal sin, also, coincidentally, absolved by the same priest! A Catholic priest is set apart by God Himself and God is very demanding of His priests: They give up, for the sake of Christ and His Church, marrying, riches, and material gain. A vow of celibacy, chastity, and poverty is required and this vow is unbreakable. In this way, upon his ordination, a priest is consecrated to God and rejects earthly distractions. “Present your body as a living sacrifice,” wrote St. Paul to the Romans. No one must sacrifice in this way more than a Catholic priest.

Priests should be the ideal role model for a young man. They should be masculine, decisive, learned, yet filled with a holy compassion for sinners. Even young men who are not called to the priesthood should look to a Catholic priest as an example of how to live because, once this young man grows up and marries, he will in effect beco

Responding to Cape Town #8 - assuming Cape Town Africa is your base, I'd ask you to take a look at the tremendous amount of work provided by Catholic Relief Agencies, Catholic Charities and Catholic Religious Orders in Africa. To compare Joseph Ratzinger to a KKK leader is barely worth responding to - but its worth stating - the Catholic Church is the single largest provider of food, housing, education and health care throughout the continent of Africa. African Catholic communities are growing at a rate that far surpasses any other region on Earth. Catholic relief workers serve the poor of Africa in the midst of civil war, famine and drought regardless of the religious traditions of those they serve. Joseph Ratzinger has been a tireless supporter of this effort, he has been a vocal critic of war as an instrument of foriegn policy and proponent of eco-friendly energy policies. Given that his first comments on board the chartered Air Italia flight that he was "deeply ashamed" of the priest sex abuse scandal suggests a man with a heart and a willingness to address issues. And you would conclude that he is at the level of the KKK. Simply unbelievable.

Right you are Tobermory - hardly worth responding to Media 1. I'm simply amazed at the capacity for mindless babble that passes for "one man's opinion." Catholic Relief Services and the low level of overhead/admin. costs they carry versus the marvelous work they do deserves credit regardless of religious affiliation. All the best to Mull!
