POPE Benedict reached out to communist China yesterday at an unprecedented concert by its national orchestra in the Vatican that the Church hopes can help to end decades of icy relations with Beijing.
The China Philharmonic Orchestra played Mozart's Requiem and Chinese folk songs, along with the Shanghai Opera House Chorus, in the Vatican's packed audience hall.

The German Pope appeared happy at the concert of European religious music by the or
chestra of an officially atheist state that has ridiculed the papacy in the past.

In his address at the end of the first part of the concert, the Pope was full of praise for the Chinese people and held out the hope that music could succeed where diplomacy has failed.

"Music, and art in general, can serve as a privileged instrument for encounter and reciprocal knowledge and esteem between different populations and cultures," said the Pope, who also managed a few words of thanks in Chinese.

Benedict has made improving relations with Beijing a major goal of his pontificate.

He issued an open letter in June saying he sought to restore full diplomatic ties with China that were severed two years after the 1949 communist takeover. Catholics in China are split between those who belong to a state-backed Church, which is not recognised by Rome, and an underground Church whose members are loyal to the Vatican.

It was to these faithful that the Pope sent a particular message.

"In greeting you this evening, dear Chinese artists, the Pope intends to reach out to your entire people, with a special thought for those of your fellow citizens who share faith in Jesus and are united through a particular spiritual bond with the Successor of Peter," he said.

In what appeared to be a message to China's leaders that they had nothing to fear by better relations, the Pope said the Vatican was a place "where people from all over the world often meet, with their own personal stories and their own culture, all of them welcomed with esteem and affection".

Communist China? What other China is there? Do you say Capitalist America each time?

Bob...bob...did you choose that name? Bob...

It's all China. The corrupt and muderous regime that fled to Taiwan and imposed its corruption and murderous regime on the locals there - were also, Chinese.

It's all China.

Mashimaro, ignore Bob. He's one of the keyboard spatterers who reads all posts for any explicit, or implicit, disagreement with, or criticism of the papacy. He then, as you'll see makes infantile jokes around your name, and decries you as a bigot because you're not RC.

When challenged, he's unable to back up his assertyions with any credible information, other than that he has ingested from approved sources.

The only reason the Pope is kissing up to China is because his church is now second in the amount of memberes it has, and China would be a great 'cash cow' for the church to milk. China is not near as aware as they are in the west about all the evil the Catholic church is guilty of. I sincerely hope that the Catholic church will never establish a foothold in China, or any other church for that matter.
We have enough problems in China with all the false accusations the west is throwing at us, we don't need the likes of the corrupt and evil Catholic church adding to that. Any church that has in its employ a bunch of child molesters like the Catholic church has, is most definitely not welcome in China.
We already have an idiot like the Dalai Lama stirring the pot, the Pope can stay in the Vatican, he's definitely not welcome here. The Catholics also don't believe in birth control, I can see our population exploding with those idiots gaining a foothold here. Like we haven't got enough people here already. The west can keep the Pope and his church.

Itchy,

The pope was a national socialist as a young man and is still a socialist today.

#3 are you seriously trying to say that the current regime is not corrupt and murderous? Communism is the most murderous ideology in history.

#12 James,
Would you like to share your view on the Catholic church?

#13 Mashimaro,
When it comes to lying, the west has got us beat in every way, we can't begin to compete. They have to be good at it, on account of all their invasions and murdering around the globe, and it's safe to say that they are far ahead of the Communists when it comes to murdering, far ahead.
11

Mashimaro,

08/05/2008 15:33:03
#12 Jimmy Dee, for a man with no opinion, you sho got a lot to say. I'll take it with as much respect as I take your other warblings on here - not bloody much.

Bob...heh...darn that name is funny... Bob...
So you worshipped at the memorial of a corrupt murdering basket. Well well well, there's an admission to make, eh. And his one saving grace in your eye is that HE fought against the communists. He wasn't any better than Mao, ya eejit. Why do you think the Taiwanese are taking down his statues and quietly shuffling him off into the shadows? Cos they're ashamed of him. As well they should be.
Not only did he run a corrupt government but he executed god knows how many innocents on Taiwan when he fled there.
So what you're saying is that you prefer that murdering, pariah to this murdering pariah. Isn't that just the western way.
China has seen leaders come and leaders go with almost predictable regularity for the last 5,000 years. In the greater scheme of things, the little abberration you love will be nothing more than a blip on the radar of history. But what we do know is this...China is like the phoenix. It continues to rise from its own ashes, and no one will ever slay it. It is China, all of it.
12

Mashimaro,

China 08/05/2008 15:39:19
#12 Jimmy Dee... there is a Catholic Church in China - in fact there are two. So that gives us a very balanced view.

19

John Blackley,

In the story we have news of a person who speaks for several millions of Roman Catholics making overtures to the Peoples' Republic of China through visiting musicians. Part of the content of this news is the continuing diplomatic behaviour of a pontiff who, as a Cardinal, was nicknamed "God's Rottweiler" - a continuation of his surprisingly diplomatic behaviour during his recent visit to the United States.

Do we get a discussion of these things? No. Do we get a discussion of the PRC's reactions? No. A discussion, perhaps, of how fetching the Pope's hat was? Not even that.

What we get is a 'Chinese' troll and a bunch of religious bigots squabbling like semi-literate children.

#20 James Donald,
The big difference between the Catholic church and the Chinese government is the fact that the Chinese government is doing it all that it can to bring our people up to an acceptable standard of living, a daunting task considering that we are still developing, the sheer size of our population, and having to worry about environmental concerns.
The Catholic church wants to come in here and rape us in both the literal and financial way. The Chinese are not familiar with the evil doings of the Catholic church, therefore easy targets, just like Central and South America, and a number of other countries as well. The Catholic church represents evil and the Pope, as their leader, is a shameless man, only worried about bringing more money into the church. The fact that they are so against birth control is a good measuring stick as to what they're all about. The more little Catholics, the more money in their coffers.

I live here and am more aware of what is happening here than what you are, and believe me, we don't need that child molesting bunch calling themselves the Catholic church coming over here and exploiting our people.

You may call me semi-literate, but you seem to have no problem understanding the points I'm trying to get across to you. While on that point, can you please show me how literate you are in Chinese?

#31 James Donald,
You already know how I feel about the Chinese government, I defend our government on many occasions, and have only good to say about what they our doing for our people.
By you being a Protestant however, you only need to look at how the Protestants and Catholics kill each other, in the name of God. Really no bragging rights there for anybody, for killing goes against everything your faith teaches you, so that is hypocritical to say the least. I have no idea why any religion condones killing, but both the Protestant religions and the Catholic religion have been at each other's throats since who knows when, and the same goes for any religion globally.
So you may accuse Communists of whatever you like, but any religion and any political system is guilty of many atrocities. It all comes down to greed and power. We don't live in a perfect world, but China comes a lot closer than any place in the west that I've been to.
31

I've been online all the time, but I do have a full time job and also help out in the business that my girlfriend and I own, so I'm rather busy. It's good to see that you've missed be though, and I'm sure you would give me a big hug if you were to see me personally.
As far as the Pope goes, he's in the same league as the Dalai Lama, both money hungry sh!t disturbers, they just go about it in different ways. The Dalai Lama kisses up to the west, whereas the Pope kisses up to everybody, especially China, for there's a lot of money to be made here. I don't know what religion you follow, but if you follow any you're a fool, for any religion is just a business, only wanting your money and they don't give a damn about you personally. Anybody foolish enough to believe they can buy a ticket to heaven deserves to get ripped off.

I strongly suspect that James Donald has never been allowed to express his own opinions, therefore you're right, it has now become too much like work for him. Just quoting the lying western media takes no thought and no effort, and makes him able to shrug off all responsibility. You and I have on many occasions tried to show him the truth about China, but what do we know? we only live here. Sitting at home in the west, within the confines of his home, sitting in his favourite armchair, he has become the EXPERT on China and Chinese affairs. The ever so 'truthful' media has told him all that he needs to know, without ever having to leave his home, or visit China. We might well have another Galactic Cannibal on our hands here, James Donald seems to report in at all times, kind of makes me wonder if he ever has left home. His parents may well be living above him, and throwing food down to him via the laundry chute.

Postmark - and the other thing you notice, of course, is that he always HAS to have the last word. Even if it makes him look like a frog.
Much of that lying western media seem to like to do a hatchet job on Chinese goods, even without being honorable enough to name the company they are hatcheting. You'll also notice - if you bother to read the bs they put out, how they leap from one topic to the next with no tangible proof of anything at all, i.e. female foetus found in a ditch - makes good mileage to bash China for its one-child policy. Forgetting, of course, that India doesn't have a one-child policy and yet goes through exactly the same thing... sorry DEMOCRATIC India.

You have just described society as a whole, everywhere in the world, the rich rule and the poor work for them, here in China, there in Scotland and any other country in the world. Next time try to come up with a creative comment, not just a gimme. But then again, you are like James Donald, you have never been allowed to think for yourself, so you're at a loss as what to say. If you can't find someone to quote , your tongue is tied, and the best you can do is babble, and only the likes of James Donald can understand that babble, the rest of us communicate clearly.

How is it that you failed to comment on the violent riots in Tibet, the attacks by the monks on the innocent people, or was your mother feeding you with a slingshot from across the room when that part of the video was playing? And how is it that you didn't comment on the little get together by the Dalai Lama and George Bush? Were you and James Donald playing in the giant litter box you mistook for a sandbox? I really doubt that you actually watched more than 2 minutes of the video, and like the little boy that you are, your attention span just couldn't hold up any longer.

And come on Biker, you do miss me, it's OK to admit that.
44

Biker,

Ayr 09/05/2008 16:23:56
Postcrap. The only thing I miss is the laugh out loud when I read some of your posts.
The violence by the "Monks" was a bit short on fact, go on admit it, so whY should I comment on it. I choose to believe what I believe on information obtained, like most of the others on here. Sadly my little deluded friend you dont.
The Dalai Lama and Dubya got together eh? I pity the poor Dalai Lama. Perhaps you lot should speak with him instead. I watched more than 2 minutes but the cr@p level was so high that it just insulted my sensebilities. Propaganda should be more subtle my stupid friend.
I dont dislike or indeed like you. You're pathetic.

#50 Probably not, but plenty on this board delight in doing so. It's sort of a hollow ring to it, when you realise what the truth is.
That being said, the continued cat pawing to bring about the fall of China will help no one. It will kill millions as the military crackdowns will harm everyone and it will push China back into the last century.
The leadership is in a precarious position.
Hardliners see the gap in the gini index and point to it as being a crucial tipping point to social unrest. They want reforms reined in, capitalism brought under control and stifled. I would agree with them, btw.
You can see the current UKUS meddling in money markets and decreases in the Fed rate that increase rice prices so again, the poorest of the poor suffer.
You can bet the fat assed yankees aren't starving - well, not the ones that count anyway. But they don't mind forcing Asia to starve so that they can bring China to her knees - or try to.
While there is a huge amount of corruption, it is not at an upper government level. It is usually out in the provinces where the new entrepreneurs find it easier to bribe officials and make a fast buck at the expense of the people and the environment. The net is closing on them. Slowly - I'll grant you that, but it is indeed closing.
Any undermining of the current government will not result in greater freedom and better lives for all. It will result in further crackdowns - and you know what will happen if Tibet is torn away.
So when I say to you, leave China the fcuk alone, your interference will only make things worse, you can see where I am coming from.
Your press needs to stop lying in its campaign to cause social unrest and the resultant misery to millions.
47

postmark54,

Chongqing, China, 10/05/2008 05:52:05
#51 Mashimaro,
Everything you explained here, as you've done so many times, is exactly what the west wants, to destroy the China of today, which is confused with the China of the past. They would love to see China brought to its knees, with the likes of James Donald creaming themselves over that very idea.
You really have no idea as to how deep the hatred in the west is for China. I saw it all my life, nothing good was ever told to me about China, ever since I can remember, the media, the education system, and of course the government have painted very bad pictures of China. These people do not wish China to succeed, and all this concern for human rights is as phoney as it gets. As you are well aware, we are hitting a brick wall everyday, but sooner or later we'll break through, I just don't know what to expect on the other side, if any are like Biker and his little gang.
Try to remember Mashimaro, you're dealing with a bunch brainwashed beyond belief, and most don't want to know the truth, for the truth is so inconvenient.
Fight on brother.
