Royal National Mod: Freeview campaign hots up

A CRUCIAL meeting takes place today at the 2008 Royal National Mod in a bid to expand the coverage by the new Gaelic digital channel, BBC Alba.
The £14 million service, launched in August as a partnership between BBC Scotland and fund holders MG Alba, is at present only available through a Sky subscription or on Freesat.

However, many households in the Highlands and Islands rely on the F
reeview network, meaning many Gaels are unable to access the new publicly-funded service set up on their behalf.

Despite sanctioning the launch of the new channel, the BBC Trust board of governors refused to make it available on Freeview on the grounds that it would need time to prove its long-term worth by attracting a wider audience in the Scottish community.

MG Alba chairman, Alasdair Morrison, will meet Jeremy Peat, the BBC Trust representative, in Falkirk today for talks on extending distribution.

"I'll bring him up to date on the positive reaction to the new channel and also the dismay that it's not available on Freeview," he said. "Clearly it's easier to make the case to secure Freeview now the channel is up and running."

Allan Campbell, who was at the forefront of many Gaelic initiatives before retiring as chief executive of the national development agency, Bord na Gaidhlig, two years ago, said:

"It seems perverse that this long-awaited service is being denied to a substantial proportion of the potential audience."

Both Western Isles Council and Highland Council have also officially joined the Freeview campaign.

Why can't we get BBC Alba programmes, that we pay for, on the BBC website? We can get eight other channels but not this one.

How, exactly, is the channel expected to attract a wider audience when the majority of people cannot receive it? Are the EBC Trust Board getting a kick-back from Sky and the cable companies?

In any event, there is an existing Gaelic channel on Freeview, but it only broadcasts for half an hour a day. Why can't they put BBC Alba on this channel?

This Catch 22 attitude of the EBC implies that they are out to destroy the channel before it can get started.

The EBC are already stealing the iniquitous television tax from us, though only a very small percentage of the money stolen from Scotland is actually spent in Scotland.

It's time that this iniquitous tax was scrapped, and that the control of broadcasting in Scotland was given to the Scottish people. We need to be free of the colonial control of the EBC, most of whom probably wouldn't even be able to find Scotland on a map.

The colonial attitude of the EBC can be seen the way they use reporters from England to report on a story in Scotland for their main news, despite the fact that the same story is covered on Reporting Scotland by a Scottish reporter.

They even had a story on the effects of the credit crunch in Aberdeen on their main news the other day. Yes, you guessed it, they had an English reporter interviewing an English woman living in Aberdeen.

Everyone in Scotland should refuse to pay the iniquitous television tax to the EBC, and bring down this vestige of English colonialism.

BBC Alba should be available free for everyone in Scotland. In Ireland the RTE gaelic TV channel is in the basic package sothat everyone can get it. Should be the same here.
Why can we get coverage of the Mod on BBC2 only for one hour a day from 23:20 to 00:20 at night - who can watch it then ???

What a waste of money to make this service only available to a couple of hundred thousand Scots. The audience must be tiny. How can the BBC and London Labour controlled broadcasting say that this is value for money??!!

And what about us exiles who only have cable tv? We cannot see it at all! There are lots of gaelic speakers and interested learners in England who would like the opportunity to view I am sure.

it doesnt take much to work out somethings wrong here, the budget is tiny..

and im sure putting it on freeview would tripple the viewing figures without trippling the cost how can this not be value for money as opposed to it only being on sky??

Heard some singing on Radio nan Gaidheal at lunchtime. It was absymal! Tuneless, old-fashioned and boring. Bha e direach sgriosail!

Lets hope BBC Alba can ditch the auld cac and give us something more exciting.

If you want modern music on BBC Scotland or BBC Alba that is fine. No one will disagree with you. But there is a lot of rubbish modern music.
There must also be space for classical and traditional music for those who want it.
