Sevens kings Selkirk bid for Border crown

SELKIRK will tonight bid to end a 56-year wait for the Border League crown against Jed-Forest at Kelso's Poynder Park having savoured a coronation as 'Kings of the Sevens' at Riverside Park on Saturday.
The Souters came out on top of the ten-tournament Borders sevens circuit for the second year running after edging past Boroughmuir in the first round of the Barratt Jed-Forest Sevens to put themselves out of sight. They were just pipped by an impressive Kelso seven in the quarter-finals 19-12, but they had done enough to seal the Kings trophy and cash prize.
Neil Darling, the Selkirk skipper, said afterwards: "It wouldn't have made much difference to our approach to the Border League final to be honest whether we'd won or lost, but being the 'Kings' again definitely provides a confidence boost.
"There were some nerves because we haven't been starting the tournaments that well recently and we knew we had to beat Boroughmuir to get the trophy because Watsonians were coming on strong."
The Edinburgh side made sure the chase for the £2,500 first prize went to the wire with a convincing 45-17 win over Hawick in the final, which would have earned them the Kings' crown had Selkirk slipped up.
