PAUL Azinger will now wait to decide if he will return for another term as United States Ryder Cup captain in 2010.
The PGA of America has a one-captain, one-time policy with no-one having led the USA into consecutive Ryder Cups since Ben Hogan in 1947 and 1949. Corey Pavin is generally regarded to be the front-runner to captain his country at Celtic Manor in Wales in two years.

Yet Azinger would be a popular choice.

Amid chants of "Zinger in 10" from Phil Mickelson and Justin Leonard during the final US team press conference Azinger did not rule out the possibility a return to the role in Wales.

"I'm not going to think about it," Azinger said. "I'm just going to stay up all night and party with my boys."

The American press were glowing in their praise of Azinger and his USA team after the 16-11 victory that sent the Ryder Cup back across the Atlantic.

Captain Azinger took a lot of the credit while the team dynamic of the US side was also hailed as the hosts ended a nine-year losing streak at Valhalla.

The New York Times said: "

The heavily favoured European team lost because of a determined and enthusiastic group of motivated newcomers, newly energised veterans like Jim Furyk and a creative captain in Azinger."

It was ironic the US finally lived up to their billing when their star asset, Tiger Woods, was injured.

The Los Angeles Times said: "For sure, the homespun Boo Weekley inspired the US team and its fans, but it still wasn't easy coming up with a blueprint for success that didn't include Tiger Woods. Yet that's exactly how the underdog US team played it."

Someone should have reminded the fans that it wasn't their usual redneck wrestling that they were watching, well done Boo, sounds like a southern red neck name so doesn't surprise me he had the Kentucky fans in a frenzy before the opposition had played their shots. Also doesn't surprise me that Azinger had the tee placements moved forward so the yardage would be out for the Europeans as they hadn't practised from that distance prior to the matches. I hope they keep Azinger as captain as this was only a flash in the pan for him helped by his cheating!

#1 What a load of nonsense, the fans were superb and it was stated by the European team that our fans were as noisy and supportive as the US. The Home Captain has the opportunity to set the course out as he sees fit that is not cheating, both sets of players still have to play the course and usually in normal golf comps they play from different tee and pin positions everyday anyway so that would not be an advantage to anyone.
Come on lets be honest, it was three great days golf with some fantastic shots (7 irons for 200+ yards) and the best team on the day won.

We can make all the excuses we like but we were beaten by the better team. Some of our players played badly and won, some played well and lost, Ollie Wilson was around 5 or 6 under and lost by 3 holes. Garcia was up against an inspired Kim who was 3 under for the first 4 holes and never relented.
