RORY McIlroy and Colin Montgomerie, playing partners over the next two days at The 3 Irish Open, have expressed totally opposite views about next year's Ryder Cup.
If European captain Montgomerie wanted to hear that the 20-year-old was already bubbling with excitement about the possibility of winning his first cap at Celtic Manor, then he could not have been more wrong. "It's not a huge goal of mine," said the
Northern Irish youngster. "It's an exhibition at the end of the day. In the big scheme of things it's not that important an event for me."

McIlroy even added that if, come the final stretch of the year-long qualifying race, he was struggling for points he would not be adding events to improve his chances. "If I play well enough I play well enough. And if I don't, then so be it," he said.

Montgomerie, on the other hand, stated that taking the trophy back off the Americans would be the greatest achievement of his career. "It's not an exhibition and it never will be," he commented. "It's a very unique, special event and much more nerve-wracking than a major.

"When you play in it you want to be there again and again."

Montgomerie does not want, however, to be seen as being at loggerheads with a player he described as "one of Europe's best young talents for many a year".

He made a request to reporters. "Please don't say that Monty and Rory are having a war here. I haven't said that. I haven't heard what Rory said, so please don't start a big war.

"Rory will understand when – and it's not an 'if' – he is a Ryder Cup player. He'll understand the pressures involved and the whole scenario of the Ryder Cup will hit him very hard.

"If he's qualified or necessitates a pick I would definitely speak to every player as to what to expect."

Despite his views at this stage, McIlroy still expects to "relish every moment of it" should he play and adds: "Obviously I'll try my best for the team – but I'm not going to go running around fist-pumping."

Meanwhile, the 45-year-old Scot declared himself perfectly happy with the decision by the players' committee on Tuesday night to grant him a third wild card. Opposite number Corey Pavin will have one more than that, but Montgomerie said: "I got what I wanted. I'm just concerned about getting the strongest team and having one more option might just allow me to do that."

When Montgomerie and McIlroy meet on the first tee at County Louth today the matter is unlikely to crop up. Both will be focused on trying to rediscover form. McIlroy's 77 at the Players Championship last Friday was his worst round of the year, while on the same day Montgomerie missed a second successive cut at the Italian Open.

If the Ryder Cup is one talking point on the European Tour this week, another is the situation with the Tour's £100 million sponsors Leisurecorp. With the global financial crisis hitting Dubai hard they have been absorbed into state-owned parent company Nakheel. But Tour chief executive George O'Grady said today that, far from it being a worrying development, it was "good news for us".

He added: "This consolidates our position and is favourable."

"Much more nerve racking than a major"
Don't, don't, er, er, don't er, make me laugh!
Good on you Rory!
An old head on young shoulders, and funnily enough, dispaying the same outlook on the Ryder Cup as some of the more accomplished veterans.
No big deal! It's only a game, and one that he enjoys and is quite good at!

No way Mackie, The Ryder Cup is the most eagerly anticipated golf event on the calendar. Tension and excitement from beginning to end, better than a Major. Professional golf is going to have to move away from so many 72 hole strokeplay events as most of it is dull to watch on TV. How about 3 man team Texas scrambles, how much fun and excitement that would be.
Young McIlroy will change his tune once he has played in the Ryder Cup.

Glad you enjoy it, there in the sunny climes of Barbados!
Do they only play Texas Scrambles over there?

As commented before, "It's only a game".
No room for philosophy.
You been up all night over there?
Can't be much sun at night!
Unless there's another Barbados a bit closer to home.....

I am suprised at Rory comments, thought he would be all about playing and excited about it. Clarke is probably one of his heros growing up and he was an excellent Ryder Cup player, and a HUGE impact at the K Club. I suspect when Rory plays the moment will catch up with him and he will start the fist pumping.....The Sun is shining in NC today not sure about Barbados, and I am willing to bet it is not shining in Leith. Mackie where have you been not seen your comments for a long time? Nothing grabbing your interest, until now.

Hello Captain!
Lost bet!
The sun is positively pounding down on Leith today...
Another season gets under way here in the British Isles as the European tour finally arrives.
The sun, as aforementioned, is out and what little rain we have had has allowed the greenkeepers to get the lawnmowers out and all is well on the Lothians fairways.
We can look forward to a super season with The Open back at Turnberry this year and a new generation of golfers refreshing the various tours.
I have been golfing a lot this winter/spring and am looking forward to the summer, which feels well under way.
Of course, the Ryder Cup is a full year away and already the jungle drums have started pounding despite qualification not starting until september!!
Off for a few holes myself now!
Happy New Year Y'All.

It was overcast this am. Sun is shining, just been at the driving range. A few clouds are kicking around....NC is a big state!

I am heading back to Scotland for a short trip in June. Have a tee-time at Carnoustie and maybe Gullane 1 if I can get my uncle to take me to play,. Hopefully the sun will shine that week.

Mackie, I'm a day late reading this story but I still wanted to respond to your comments. It's great to see a familiar name. I've been wondering what happened to you. Please be sure to keep that sun shining. I'm heading to Edinburgh in late June. One stop on our stay will be Leith. Hope your golf game is going well.
