Men face a ticking clock on fatherhood from age 40, study claims

Published Date: 07 July 2008
MEN have a biological clock which starts to tick when they turn 40, a new study suggests.
Infertility specialists found that miscarriage rates increased significantly and pregnancy rates dropped when the father was older than 40.

It is the first time paternal age has been seen to have such a strong effect on reproductive success.

A
lthough the study involved thousands of men and women being treated for infertility, its findings are relevant to all couples, the researchers said.

Dr Stephanie Belloc, the study leader from the Eylau Centre for Assisted Reproduction in Paris, said: "Until now, gynaecologists only focused on maternal age and the message was to get pregnant before the age of 35 or 38.

"But now the gynaecologists must also focus on paternal age and give this information to the couple."

Dr Belloc's team followed up a total of 21,239 artificial insemination procedures carried out between January 2002 and December 2006.

The 12,236 couples had decided to try intrauterine insemination (IUI) after having difficulty conceiving. IUI involves spinning sperm in a centrifuge to separate it from seminal fluid and then inserting it directly into the womb.

Before each procedure, researchers noted the quantity, activity and shape of the man's sperm. Pregnancy, miscarriage and delivery rates were also recorded. Detailed analysis allowed the scientists to separate male and female factors relating to pregnancy success or failure.

As expected, the pregnancy rate was significantly reduced for women over the age of 35 while the miscarriage rate was higher. But the study unexpectedly found that being older than 40 also made it harder for men to become fathers.

For men aged under 39 the miscarriage rate was 16.7 per cent. But after the age of 40 it rose sharply to about 35 per cent.

Pregnancy rates also only began to change significantly when men reached 40.

As men's age increased from 39 to 44 the proportion of treatment cycles producing a pregnancy fell from 13.4 per cent to 10.9 per cent.

Professor Yves Menezo, who worked on the study, said: "We found the paternal impact on miscarriage was much stronger when men passed age 40."

He added: "As expected, older women were less likely to get pregnant and had more miscarriages than younger ones, but surprisingly the risk of miscarriage was also far higher for couples in which the man was past 40, about 35 per cent."

The findings were presented at the weekend at the meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Barcelona, Spain.

Many reports show an overall decline in sperm count and quality as men age, but experts have disagreed on whether or not this is simply the result of getting older. Lifestyle factors such as smoking and obesity have also been blamed.

Dr Belloc said: "Our research proves for the first time that there is a strong paternal age- related effect on IUI outcomes, and this information should be considered by both doctors and patients."

BACKGROUND

A NUMBER of recent studies show men are not totally immune from reproductive ageing. Five years ago, researchers at the University of California Berkeley found men become less fertile each year and

that the male biological clock begins in their 20s.

Unlike women, men lose their fertility gradually and can still be fertile in old age. The UC Berkeley team examined the sperm from nearly 100 healthy men aged between 22 and 80. They tested sperm motility – its liveliness and direction of movement, and discovered that it decreases by 0.7 per cent each year.

This means that the chances of sperm being clinically abnormal or unhealthy is 25 per cent at 22 years of age. By 30 that figure jumps to 40 per cent, rising to 60 per cent at 40. At the age of 60, 85 per cent of sperm is clinically abnormal.

Just put a 'damper' on it why don't you,?

Well, I knew this when my DYW and I started our fertility treatment, what I did not know was about the,...

Higher Miscarriage Rate.

This has always been on my mind if we are ever lucky enough to get Pregnant, now my confounded worries have only got worse,!

Mind you there is 'Old Rod Stewart' who fathered a child in his 'Mature Years', :))

Soo Why Not Me,? :((

BTW, I am NOT as old as he is!

The whole Subject of 'Trying-To-Conceive', Boils down to one thing,...'Do it when you are Young' for the best results!

Mind you, 'Some' have Problems when in their younger years aswell,

My DYW was in her 'Late Teens' when we started to try for, 'A-Baby'...

Unknown to her and I, she was suffering from PCOS!

This took the GP's and Three Changes of GP's Practices to find out!

A Total of 5years Wasted, and 'Poor Me' 5years Older! :(

When we first started our IVF the old 'tadpole' count and shape, were OK.

Not Soo Good now though! :((

So both My DYW and I have 'Problems' in the 'Conception' Department Now!

Even our IVF team, say we are more difficult to treat, than most,..

"A Complicated Couple" was what that was said. :(

Anyway,..'Old Charlie Boy' has NO intentions of leaving this World, until his DYW has,..

'A Baby'!

If anyone is more Deserving, to 'Have-a-Baby' It IS My Wife,

Her Job is with 'Working With Babies' and she has a Special Place in Her Heart for,,

'Special Needs Children'.

But 'Nature is Cruel' at Times, as it has been for my Wife!

'Easy for Some',..But Not..'Others'!

We Keep Hopeful though! and with the help and Excellence of the,

Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Simpson's Reproductive Unit,

Maybe our 'Dream' will become, 'Reality', one Day Soon!

I must say one point before I leave this comment though,

Fertility; was never given a thought in my younger years,..

Now the, Mental Stress and 'Heartbreak' it brings not being able to conceive, is

..continue..,

Unbelievably.. 'Mind Boggling'!

Never before in my Life, would I have given this subject thought!

But then,..

Never in My Life, would I have thought, I would be married to my 'Beautiful' Wife, who wants a Child of ours!

Also her 'Maternal Instinct' is in 'Full Force'!

This IS NOT just Mentally, she has very real 'Physical' conditions, that are telling her to,..

'Have-a-Baby'

Reminds me of quite a good joke:

The doctor said, 'Joe, the good news is I can cure your headaches. The bad news is that it will require castration. You have a very rare condition, which causes your testicles to press on your spine and the pressure creates one hell of a headache. The only way to relieve the pressure is to remove the testicles.'

Joe was shocked and depressed. He wondered if he had anything to live for. He had no choice but to go under the knife.

When he left the hospital, he was without a headache for the first time in 20 years, but he felt like he was missing an important part of himself. As he walked down the street, he realised that he felt like a different person. He could make a new beginning and live a new life.

He saw a men's clothing store and thought, 'That's what I need... a new suit.' He entered the shop and told the salesman, 'I'd like a new suit.'

The elderly tailor eyed him briefly and said, 'Let's see...

size 44 long.'

Joe laughed, 'That's right, how did you know?'

'Been in the business 60 years!' the tailor said.

Joe tried on the suit, it fit perfectly. As Joe admired himself in the mirror, the salesman asked, 'How about a new shirt?'

Joe thought for a moment and then said, 'Sure.'

The salesman eyed Joe and said, 'Let's see, 34 sleeves and 16-1/2 neck.'

Joe was surprised, 'That's right, how did you know?

'Been in the business 60 years.'

Joe tried on the shirt, and it fitted perfectly.

Joe walked comfortably around the shop, and the salesman asked, 'How about some new underwear?'

Joe thought for a moment and said, 'Sure.'

The salesman said, 'Let's see... size 36.'

Joe laughed, 'Ah ha! I got you. I've worn a size 34 since I was 18 years old.'

The salesman shook his head, 'You can't wear a size 34.

A size 34 would press your testicles up against the base of your spine and give you one hell of a headache.'

New suit - £400
New shirt - £36
New underwear - £6

As you get older, your body becomes less efficient and more prone to illness and/or malfunction.

What ground-breaking news! Now tell us something we don't know.

Batboy ~6,

Dont beleive a word of the malicious gossip Boy Wonder spreads about, he is only jealous.

terry ~7,

I bet you love being a 'daddy' again in your 'mature' years to your 5month old 'little darling',

You give me real hope now!

This is suspiciously politically correct & I would have to see an independent verification. Not surprising then that it gets so much media coverage. It would not be surprising if there are other researches which have come to different conclusions & don't get covered.

See
"For men aged under 39 the miscarriage rate was 16.7 per cent. But after the age of 40 it rose sharply to about 35 per cent."

It should have struck the investigators that men over 40 are statistically likely to have older wives too, which is bound to influence this result.

Is Batboy the new netname of Boy Wonder?

Charles, I don't know how old you are but it may have something to do with male andropause - the equivalent of female menopause.

Good luck on your continued efforts with your DYW to have a child
12

Charles Linskaill,

Edinburgh 07/07/2008 13:34:12

Tim ~11,

My thoughts exactly, I think Batboy could be Boy wonders 'side kick' while Boy Wonder is away on holiday, it appears.

I also observe, there is no women comments on this subject, not even our 'Crankers'!

Maybe they all have other methods of being able to conceive, without the use of men! Afterall scientits did say they found a process to make tadpoles from other methods,

Now I am becoming depressed, WHAT a fab way to start my week, maybe Boy Wonder is correct, and I should, 'end it all'. :((
13

TimW1234,

NO! NO! NO!

Then you would leave your DYW a widow.

You would not want that would you? :)))
14

Charles Linskaill,

Edinburgh 07/07/2008 13:56:43

Neil ~10,

Being the 'Charming Good Looking' Man that I am, I fall outside these, "statistics" and my DYW is about half my age,

Miscarriage is a worry for me, he we ever get Pregnant after nearly 11years of trying.
15

Charles Linskaill,

Edinburgh 07/07/2008 14:05:15

Tim ~13,

No I would not 'end it all' only joking!

Afterall Boy Wonder needs me to annoy him and 'Wonder' about and my DYW, still needs her Baby.

#1 (and various)
Jeez, Chuckles, you and Timbo could work up a conspiracy between the two of you. No, I do not know who Batboy is, although he makes a good point. (Is Batboy even male I wonder?). And I do not "spread malicious gossip" about you as you well know. I tell the truth you are in denial over. You ARE 94 and "past it" but I always encourage you with DYW in your efforts to get a baby. Maybe you just aren't "viable" any more?? You should consider this.
And pompous old Timbo isn't even Canadian. I bet his ISP indicates somewhere like Thurso or some out of the way place down in the wilds of Cornwall.

Boy Wonder

Now don't you go giving Charles Linskaill (NOT "Chuckles to you) and myself ideas about how we can REALLY make you feel paranoid about a "conspiracy theory".

I shall now put on my thinking cap and devise ways to torment you in the gentlest possible ways.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

tick tock, tick tock!! Oh so thats what I hearing when I'm on the bus going to work. Thank goodness it isn't me!!!

And they said Vigra was a wonder drug!!!

Ah mental note to self find toy boy at 22.

BUT in all honisty a 100 men out of how many in the world. Don't know the answer to that one!

BUT I'm gessing it's NOT even 1% of the golbal male population. The study is so small that it can only give hints of trend that mite exsit.

There are other factors that are involed in this such as Ethicity, Gentics, and life style to name three other varables.
