'Jobs for all' pledge in poll hustings

THE Prime Minister said he wanted to create an economy with "jobs for all" as he campaigned in Glasgow yesterday.
Gordon Brown was visiting the Glasgow North East constituency to support the Labour candidate Willie Bain.

"I want to see a situation where, not only do we give you new opportunities in education, but we create an economy where there are jobs for
all," Mr Brown said on a tour of the Langside College of Further Education.

Mr Brown also attacked the SNP government's decision to axe the Glasgow Airport Rail Link describing it as "inexplicable, wrong, and shortsighted".

His wife, Sarah, has been campaigning in the seat vacated by the former Commons speaker Michael Martin.

The SNP's David Kerr focused on education. With education secretary Fiona Hyslop, Mr Kerr visited the John Wheatley College in the constituency.

He said: "When it comes to education, Labour have their priorities all wrong.

"Despite a record settlement from the SNP government, the Labour Council has closed five primary schools in Glasgow North East against the wishes of parents, slashed teacher numbers and increased class sizes."

Conservative candidate Ruth Davidson said in her campaigning: "Labour is now the party of unemployment."

Former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy was in Glasgow with candidate Eileen Baxendale, who said Labour's recession was damaging business.

Er Gordon, London Labour has had 12 years to create an economy with 'jobs for all'.

You may well have done that in Middle England but you certainly haven't done it in Scotland and most certainly NOT done it in Glasgow North East.

So good old Gordon would prefer to take money away from the Health Service, reduce police on the streets, and increase class sizes in primary schools, just to spend hundreds of millions of pounds on a rail link to the airport which few people in Glasgow will be using. Especially the good folk in Glasgow North East. Let me repeat some of a post from last week.

We in the North East of Glasgow are not interested in the Glasgow rail link, and why should we be? Labour are kidding themselves if they think we are.

What family of four, lugging heavy suitcases, would choose to walk to a bus stop, wait half an hour for a bus that might not turn up? Just to take them into the centre of Glasgow?

At five in the morning in the pitch black, and/or in heavy rain?

Just to take them into the chaos of the city centre, and then have to walk from the bus stop to the station? With the cases?

And then stand in another queue with the rest of the crowds to catch a train to the airport? Still lugging the cases?

Does Gray Iain think we're mad? It reminds me of the advert for Mash get Smash.

After giving them a complimentary wake up call, any local taxi will pick up the whole family from outside their front door and whisk them in comfort straight down the M8 to the airport in ten minutes flat. And all for a fixed price of fourteen quid.

The SNP are absolutely right. The rail link to the airport is a total waste of tax payers' money, at least as far as the good folk in the North East of Glasgow are concerned. It's a no brainer. Build hospitals and schools instead.

What I find even more outrageous is the story on the BBC and Bryan Taylor hosting the radio show with out any SNP representation. Surely there are rules for these shows? Why do the BBC continue to get away with the blatant bias they show towards the Labour party in Scotland?

If the SNP do win this byelection it will be a miracle.

If Labour can't win an election with a 10000 majority without their pals in BBC Scotland fixing the coverage to exlude the opposition, they are in serious trouble.

It's the BBC, British Broacasting Corporation ,which basically means the SNP will always be sidelined by the BBC as they (we) want to break up Britain and be Independent.

I am pleased that GARL has been shelved. I am one of those who advocate one Central Airport for Central Scotland.

What Glasgow needs first, as far as railways go, is a new combined Rail and Bus Station that serves all routes, instead of two separate terminus stations for the trains and a bus station boxed in by a shopping centre. The existing bus station is going to have a car park built over it if the crazy councillors have their way. Anything to turn a fast buck.

If the new Central Airport remains a dead duck, then Garl might have a future once the dead-end city centre links have been replaced with some system that works for the people who matter, the travelling public.

What I find fascinating about this contest is the SNP candidate is accused of having two birth places.Every single person I have asked was giving the locus of their earliest memories as their birth place, when in fact they were born in a hospital a few miles away. I myself give my birthplace as Edinburgh, when in fact I was born in Leith ,and grew up in neither!I made no attempt to deceive whatsoever, nor did anybody else!
Contrast that with the Labour Party candidates position who claims he lives in GLASGOW but works in LONDON where he has a flat in Islington. The address he lives at in Glasgow is his parents house despite the neighbours having no idea who he is!
If you believe that one ...............no comment!You work it out!

Of course Mr Bains house will be needed for A. N Other LABOUR mp to rent from him,and claim back the cost of buying the house which is then paid to Mr Bain who meantime rents a house from A.N Other Labour MP and they get that mortgage paid for also, except its you and me paying for it.
IF WE ARE BUYING THESE HOUSES WE (courtesy of the state) SHOULD OWN THESE HOUSES and there should be one allocated to each consituency, and they dont need to claim rent because they dont pay any.

Any airport near the m8 would serve 50% of Scotlands population who live in and around Glasgow and Edinburgh,and we have two airports there(Glasgow and Edinburgh) and even have Prestwick which is relatively fog free if we need it.
Our airport provision is quite good,but we could always expand the flight destinations available of course
Even if we only connect to Heathrow and Schiphol we cover the world in two flights.We once thought nothing of commuting to Prestwick or even Heathrow so I cant see any problem provided the bus/tram services from the airport link to our rail network at some point.
One thing that does bother me though is why the ferry from Rosyth does not call in at LEITH,which it has to pass anyway .Its only the capital city after all.

4000 people are on benefits in Glasgow NE. Assuming at least 2000 are healthy-ish and employable, that's potentially 2000 new recruits for cannon fodder in Afghanistan.

Figures released by Glasgow Council reveal the total number of postal vote applications granted for the by-election has reached 6,065 - an increase of 3646 on the 2005 figure of 2419.

It has also emerged that in the month of October alone the voters roll in Glasgow North East increased by an astonishing 2438 people, rising from 60037 at the start of the month to 62475 by the 31st.

The increases in postal votes mirror those of the Glenrothes by-election in 2008 where postal vote applications rose from 4181 in 2005 to 6954 in 2008. Of those 6954 applications 5584 were actually cast (around 80%).

Arshad Mahmood was yesterday jailed for six months after being found guilty at Bradford crown court of posing as another voter in last year's local elections, reported the Yorkshire Post (Sept 9, p6).

Mr Mahmood voted unlawfully for Labour in a Bradford City Council ward that was narrowly won by the Conservatives by three votes. Police were brought in after a presiding officer recognised him as having voted at his polling station.

The court heard that Mr Mahmood had been working as a runner for Salamat Ata, the losing Labour candidate in the disputed ward, and claimed that part of his duties were to help voters who had difficulty understanding the ballot.

Pretty Lame Graham, the Labour Party we knew is largely gone and will stay that way until the Unions rebel, I remember how it was when I was considering going to Bournmouth College to pursue a career in our Union, they would have sorted this lot out.

The problem goes right to the core; I see now that the guy chosen to implemement the expenses says he won't necessarily stick to the recommendations.

I find myself further and further from Labour as time goes by. I had real hopes when Wendy came but she was done in by a colleague because she wanted devolution a la John Smith.
