GLASGOW is to host an international conference on sports science in the run-up to the London Olympics.
The International Convention on Science, Education, and Medicine in Sport (ICSEMIS) will meet in the city weeks before the opening ceremony of the 2012 Games. The event will examine ways of improving athletes' performance levels and aim to improve th
e health of the public.
The successful bid came two years after a consortium of five British universities – Brunel, the lead body, along with the University of Strathclyde, Liverpool John Moores, UWIC (Cardiff) and Ulster University – joined forces to lobby for the event.
Professor Nanette Mutrie, of Strathclyde's faculty of education, said: "Strathclyde is at the forefront of physical activity for health research in Scotland.
"Our mission is to train the future workforce, which includes coaches, physical educators and sport and physical activity professionals, to encourage increased levels of physical activity across the lifespan and to engage in research aimed at improving public health," Prof Mutrie added.
Steven Purcell, the leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "Glasgow's outstanding conference credentials and proud sporting heritage make it the ideal location for this pre-Olympic conference."
The 3,000-delegate convention, which will take place at the SECC in July 2012, will generate more than £5 million for the local economy.
