Ok, how about numbers being painted on the kerb in front of houses in fluorescent paint so that emergency services can easily identify where they needed to be. This happened in my suburb in Australia and it made the job of finding a property much easier for everyone. The numbers were painted in an oval shape about the size of a GB car sticker and it wasn't unsightly at all. In our suburb it was actually the firemen who came round and did it and the cost, which was minimal, was added to our rates at the end of the year. If there is a will, there is a way.

It should be made compulsory to clearly mark the number of your house so that it is visible from the street.

The Aussie idea seems a good one.

In the area around where I have my house in Scotland there are NO street numbers. Every house is identified by it's name, most of the houses were built between 1850 and 1880. Why would we want to have numbers. I like have a house name, it is traditional and suggests a certain status, pompous I know but true nonetheless.

Maybe the emergency services should have better maps, etc.!
p.s. I don't mean to disparage these services as I firmly believe that the do a wonderful job in often very trying circumstances.
