A TEENAGE soldier who killed an army friend during a high-speed car race was given four years' detention yesterday.
Stephen Jackson, 18, had passed his driving test only a month earlier when he hit a lamppost near Penicuik, Midlothian, killing his passenger, Scott Wilson, 20.
He had been racing 19-year-old apprentice electrician James Craig, who was detained for eight months at the High Court in Aberdeen.
Jackson, from Glasgow, who was 17 at the time, had been on a trip from Glencorse Barracks to buy cigarettes with Mr Wilson on 5 January when he began racing with Craig, from Penicuik, shortly before 3am.
They drove at up to 80 mph on the A701, overtaking each other, before Jackson lost control while attempting to turn a corner.
Mr Wilson died of multiple injuries in the crash.
Jackson had previously admitted causing death by dangerous driving, while Craig had pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.
