A MAN who attacked a businessman, inflicting brain injuries, in the mistaken belief that he was a rapist, was jailed for five years and three months yesterday.
John Chalmers, 47, has had to "learn everything again" and step down from a senior role in his family's bakery firm in Aberdeen because of the assault.
He had become friends with Steven Macleod's sister, a woman less than half his age, and Mr Macleod thought, wrongly, Mr Chalmers had raped her.
On Christmas Day, 2007, Mr Macleod struck Mr Chalmers on the head with a length of wood. Mr Macleod, 28, of Aberdeen, admitted assaulting Mr Chalmers to his permanent impairment and the danger of his life.
The judge, Lord Uist, said: "This was a disgraceful and wholly unnecessary piece of violence with appalling and long-lasting consequences."
