A MAN who stabbed three strangers outside a nightclub was jailed for five and a half years yesterday, and told he could count himself lucky.
One of Derek Taylor's victims had required emergency surgery without which he could have died, said the judge, Lord Bracadale.

"Had that happened, you could have been facing a charge of murder. That is a measure of the danger of carrying and using knives," added the judge.

Taylor, 23, of Ardrossan, Ayrshire, admitted three knife assaults early on 24 February outside the Metro nightclub in Saltcoats. He had been ejected, and returned with a knife and carried out unprovoked attacks on "people unfortunate enough to cross his path," the High Court in Edinburgh heard.

Taylor stabbed Ashley McMahon, 20, on the chest, causing a small wound. Next, he went for Peter Blackstock, 23, and caught him in the stomach. Mr Blackstock underwent surgery for damage to his small bowel. Finally, Taylor stabbed James Hodierne, 17, on the leg. The injury needed three stitches.
