SNP draws up battlelines for an assault on the 'real issues'

THE SNP conference will start today with a call from Alex Salmond, the First Minister, for the party to focus on real issues, real families and the real economy.
Mr Salmond will tell delegates that they must prepare to tackle the aftermath of the financial crisis as it hits the real economy, possibly seeing businesses going to the wall and people losing their jobs.
He also intends to retaliate on claims that the crisis has undermined the case for independence, with a detailed rebuttal.
But the message on the cost of living will reflect the theme of the by-election campaign in Glenrothes, where the party is demanding the UK government help people with fuel bills by cutting VAT on it by 5 per cent.
"People want their fuel bills stabilised and the wider economy stabilised to address rising unemployment and the threat to jobs and investment," he was due to say in his opening remarks.
"SNP success in Glenrothes will force the UK government to deliver a major programme to give help to hard-pressed families."
