THREE prisoners have gone on the run after absconding from Scottish open prisons.
John Cartledge and Dennis Smyth have both been missing since Wednesday, when they failed to return to Castle Huntly open prison near Dundee.
Cartledge, 41, was jailed for eight years in May 2004 after pleading guilty to assault to severe injury, permanent disfigurement and to the danger of life.
He was granted home leave but failed to return.
Smyth, 38, a convicted housebreaker, was also granted home leave but failed to return.
Tayside Police yesterday confirmed that Simon Lister, a 28-year-old inmate at the open prison in Noranside, Angus, had also absconded.
Lister, a former soldier from Penicuik, was given a seven-year jail term at the High Court in Edinburgh in 2004 after being convicted of a series of assaults and robberies on pensioners.
A police spokeswoman said he had failed to returnfrom home leave which he was granted on 9 July.
